I thought I would share my experience over the weekend with the Hawkeye Nation. I am still trying to digest the game and what my feelings are over that segment of the experience. Certainly it wasn't what any of had hoped for and I am not sure if it was a talent issue or preparation issue, my head tells me it was A LOT of both.
Anyway, I landed at LAX around noon on the 30th and my Dad was late getting in from the Quad Cities via Atlanta because of fog. My initial reaction was one of immense comradery as there was a sea of black gold at LAX. Tipping of hats, fist pump and plenty of "Go Hawks" from everyone. It started a tidal wave of emotion and anticipation for kick-off.
Finally we got out to the curb about 3PM and waited forever for the Avis bus. Enterprise, Hertz and every other agency must have come bye 12 times before the Avis bus presented itself. We get on and 100 yards to the next terminal the driver broke the knob for the air brakes and we had to wait another 5 minutes for yet another Avis bus, it is now 3:30 and we really want to be at the convention center for the Hawkeye Huddle.
Off we go and we arrive at the convention center about 20 after 4. After getting gouged on parking we are inside and holy crap what a sight to behold. A sea of black and gold...
My Dad retired on Tuesday as a dentist and met up with a friend who was also a dental school friend from Iowa's dental program. Good to see friends of 40+ years get together again to talk. You never know when your time is up on this earth, and the hour glass has more sand in the bottom than the top for both of them.
Sometimes I wish we had a better spokesperson than Tom Arnold, but alas it was really a great event and being their for the end while the band played on was worth it.
While this event was very cool, we had no idea how great the USS Iowa battleship experience would be the next day. GREAT JOB by the I-Club of Los Angeles.
