My biggest complaint....our SOS

Who put together our out of conference schedule? We can complain about how the RPI is a flawed tool all day, but the bottom line is the committee uses it and everyone knew that when the schedule was made.

You don't need to be a PhD in Math to figure out how to manipulate the RPI. If you schedule a tough out of conference schedule and you are handsomely rewarded even if you lose. But the opposite is true too. So when you play a bunch of D3 equivalent teams you are absolutely killed using the RPI formula even if you win.

It's shameful that our athletic department hasn't figured this out.

If we scheduled a tough non conference, we would be a bubble NIT team. This team isn't very good and all the talk about depth is a bit silly, given guys off the bench have more fouls than points night after night. Regardless of our SOS, the team had multiple chances for a signature win or two and couldn't seal the deal, then punctuated with a loss at NE.

What Shane said. This was an easy call for Fran. I can completely understand why he went Non-Conference Light this season.
Having said that, they had better toughen up next seasons non-con considerably.

Oh okay. Glad we cost ourselves a tourney bid so our freshman got to play some D3 talent.
We cost ourselves a tourney bid because we lost to Purdue and Nebraska as well as others we had won or a shot to win before collapsing at the end of games. You sound like you're expecting the same record, but against much better competition...probably not a wise assumption.

I believe it was Sherman Dillard in an interview on 1700 The Champ a couple of weeks ago who said that Iowa is definitely going to schedule up now that they have more experience and talent.

We didn't even need to schedule top 100 teams. Just don't schedule the bottom 250 teams. We played 7 teams OOC that have RPI's of 250 or lower. There is no excuse for that. Our RPI would be 20-30 places higher if we just would have played teams with RPI's of 150-250 instead of bottom 250. You really don't think we wouldn't have gone 7-0 against those teams at home?

Well it took a huge comeback to beat a Gardner Webb team that only recently got back into the top 200, so it's not a given.

Honestly what team that is rebuilding has a choice but to have an easy OOC schedule? Ya it is now hurting Iowa but so would scheduling tougher teams who would have beating you guys to a pulp, leaving you with 15 or so wins. Its tough to swallow but it is what it is. Face it Iowa is young and average at best. Gessell being out hurts you guys as well.

Do you remember how swimmingly games against Central Michigan and Gardner Webb went?

Iowa isn't going to come out unscathed from that every time. No way you can say they would have went 11-2 playing tougher teams or more teams just at G-W's level.

The SOS would be a non issue if they knew how to close the deal against Michigan state, Wisconsin, Minnesota. Iowa had all 3 games won and ****** all 3 down their legs, plain and simple. Iowa had great opportunities and didn't seize any of them. Iowa has nobody to blame but themselves.

Your biggest complaint is the non-con / SOS? How 'bout the constant whole-sale line shifts? How 'bout Zeller going for 22 while every big played no more than 18? Meanwhile, how 'bout 28 minutes of futile hope by JO (not to mention the other 500 wasted minutes this season?) How 'bout recognizing your guys who are playing their best ball (May was the obvious start, today, for his athleticism and spark!) and focusing on today's matchup, rather than dogmatically following the ******? (Edit: I typed "******". Don't know why it went profanity filter.)

All are representative of this season's missed opportunites that could have easily overcome the inherent sos obstacle.! We already have a coach across the way that specializes in this. I'm hoping the basketball coach can check himself before he falls into the same rut of undermining his team by failing to maximize strenghts and situations.

ok...

It's sucks that somebody keeps making you open these threads. BTW, the 2 freshman excuse is really lame.

regardless of lameness, that's the reasoning, Fran believes in matching the schedule to the team ... and it's been repeated here ad infinitum
