My B1G Power Rankings for 9/30 and also SOS Rankings

The Hawkeyes have played five games and I have to admit they are better than I thought they would be. This weekend’s game against Michigan State will be a great test for the Iowa offense while the game at Ohio State in two and a half weeks will offer the stiffest test of the year for the defense. For now, let’s enjoy Iowa’s 4-1 start. Here is my Big Ten Power rankings for this week, with last week’s below

1. Ohio State: Wisconsin stayed closer than I thought they would
2. Wicsonsin: They’ve played better, consistently, than anyone other than the Buckeyes
3. Northwestern: Host OSU this weekend. If they hang=legit. If smoked=same as it every was
4. Nebraska: Illinois scores a lot of points and gains a lot of yards. Dark colored shirts, beware
5. Michigan: They need to blowout Minnesota to regain mojo. That should happen
6. Iowa: Hawkeyes raising eyebrows in the B1G footprint
7. Michigan State: They’ve played one of the weakest schedules of any B1G team
8. Penn State: They had the biggest week in the B1G; sanction ending early
9. Illinois: Poised to make a huge jump if they can beat the Bugeaters
10. Minnesota: No passing game, no chance
11. Indiana: Who knows, or really cares?
12. Purdue: Buried at home by 31 to NIU. “Hello, Bru? Tal here.â€

BONUS LIST
Here is each Big Ten team’s strength of schedule ranking according to Jeff Sagarin

21. Purdue
79. Indiana
85. Iowa
103. Illinois
108. Penn State
119. Ohio State
121. Nebraska
123. Northwestern
133. Michigan
135. Wisconsin
156. Minnesota
169. Michigan State

It’s tough to swallow Wisconsin’s ranking..they went on the road and played at Arizona State and then at Ohio State. Tough to think how their slate is ‘easier’ than the one Iowa and everyone else has played thus far.

LAST WEEK
1. Ohio State
2. Northwestern
3. Wisconsin
4. Nebraska
5. Michigan
6. Michigan State
7. Iowa
8. Penn State
9. Minnesota
10. Illinois
11. Indiana
12. Purdue

That SOS with Wisconsin makes no sense at all. It can only mean that Umass, Tenn. Tech, and Purdue are THAT BAD. One would think that Arizona St. and Ohio St. would make up for that.

Is that SOS rankings a mistake? I know playing UMass and Middle Tenn hurts your SOS but so should playing Missouri State and W Michigan like Iowa did.

I'm kind of puzzled too, but playing an undefeated FBS in preseason must some how mitigate the Mizzou State blot. WM and ISU ?? Is interesting how we can be that high compared to Whisky.

Im interested to see if Michigan is as bad as they have looked the first 4 games. Potential to be a bad team but at 4-0 they have done just enough so far.

Nebraska is a big pretender as well. Living in Omaha I tell every husker fan I know that its time to retire the "black shirts" you can't be that bad on defense for so many years and use that nickname anymore. Then they will hold some team to under 40 this year and the news will be, "Bo handed out the blackshirts!". I really think that the fans believe these shirts impart some power to the players, its very odd.

I think there may be some errors in that Sagaran methodology. He has Baylor #3, Iowa as the third best BoneG team, and Northern Iowa above Northern Illinois. DAMN YOU MATH!

UMass (171), Tennessee Tech (198) and Purdue (119) are all that bad. I would agree that Wisconsin has had two very difficult games on the road, so the SOS doesn't mean all that much at this point. Had Wisky just played semi-bad teams rather than horrible teams their SOS would be much higher.

Iowa has played 2 really bad teams: Western Michigan (179) and Missouri State (149). But then also 3 teams in the top 75 in Northern Illinois (52), Iowa State (65) and Minnesota (72). Wisky's SOS will continue to climb with Northwestern, Iowa, BYU, all coming up. Badgers are in a position to win rest of their games. Toughest games left are @ Iowa, home to BYU and home to Northwestern. They will probably be favored in all of them.

It was awesome when they wore actual black jerseys this year against Wyoming or whoever and they ran for 1600 yards. Or was it against UCLA?

I think the most stunning development in the B1G this season is the unequivocal atrocity that is Nebraska's defense.

shame on me ... I thought 3-9 was logical for this year, but I failed to look hard enough at our opponents' warts

With MSU's struggles on offense, I'd be surprised if we didn't win this week ... that's 5-1 with Purdue still on the schedule, so we should be at-least bowling this winter

Actually your prediction isn't wrong because the opponents were weak. Your prediction is wrong because we are much, much better than last year, and you assumed we would be as bad if not worse...
