My B1G Power Rankings for 1-9-14

The top 4 is easy (MSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, and OSU), it is the next 5 where it gets a little crazy. The bottom 3 seem pretty defined (PSU, Nebraska, and Northwestern), Amazingly Illinois could fall into the bottom group as they have a tough schedule ahead.

I have no problem with Jon's ranking but mine would look like Windsor's. If this was an "end of season" ranking I would have Iowa 3rd and not 1st or 2nd. There is no way that Illinois should be any higher than 9th. I still think they will beat a top 4 team at home this year, I just hope it isn't us.

This is Jon's from last week...sure it looks a bit different this week.

We all seem to agree there are 5 NCAA locks with Minnesota, Indiana and Purdue having a shot...in no particular order. Illinois and 1 of the 3 in question for the NCAA probably play in the NIT. The other 3 just looking to pull the big upset night in and night out.

Minnesota needs a win tonight at home and Ohio State has to stop the bleeding. It should be a very intense game...what I expect to see. Ohio State can't lose at Minnesota and realistically entertain hopes of winning the Big 10 IMO. Minnesota can't lose a home game with a probable loss at Iowa Sunday putting them at 4 losses and 2-4 in conference.

Just for conversation purposes I projected my power rankings through the weekend games. The bolded are the projected winners.

Tonight:
Ohio State @ Minnesota
Saturday:
Northwestern @ Indiana
Michigan @ Wisconsin
Penn State @ Purdue
Michigan State @ Illinois
Sunday:
Minnesota @ Iowa

In this scenario these would be my power rankings:
1. MSU - Still undefeated and owns a victory over one of the top 4, have won easier on the road than at home.
2. Wisconsin - I still think they are the best in the Big Ten but the loss @ Indiana knocks them down a notch.
3. Iowa - Are 1-1 against the top 4, need to take care of business at home against Minnesota.
4. Ohio State - No big win yet in conference play and honestly they could lose tonight at Minnesota
5. Michigan - Also no big win yet in conference but would slip past Ohio State even if they lose at Wisconsin.
6. Indiana - Big question mark here, they have beaten Wisconsin but have lost @Illinois and badly to MSU at home.
7. Minnesota - Gave MSU all they wanted on the road, a win tonight would go a long ways to moving up.
8. Purdue - The big win last night puts them on the radar, the next 2 games are favorable (PSU and @Northwestern).
9. Illinois - Tough schedule in front of them, the last 2 losses really hurt. Saturday looks to be a must win game for them or they could find themselves on a real long losing streak.
10. (tie)Penn State/Nebraska - No win for either team yet but both have played tough at home.
12. Northwestern - Of the bottom 3 they are the only team with a win, but I still think they are the worst in the B1G.

Pretty much agreed with everything here but added my bolded part. If the season ended today Illinois would still be on the bubble for a NCAA bid. Even after the loss last night they still are ranked 39th on the RPI. Obviously with the schedule ahead of them they need to pull off an upset or 2 to remain in the conversation.

I know but Jon posted his updated poll early this morning on the site homepage. He has Iowa 1st and MSU 2nd. I think the rest if the same as yours.

That is odd, he usually starts a thread linking any articles he has written. Shows how much attention I pay to his home page. :D

Minnesota winning last night may help get 7 teams into the tournament. It would be hard to deny Minnesota a bid if get to 20 wins.

The latest bracketology came out after Indiana beat Wisconsin but before Minnesota won last night, and it had Minnesota in and Indiana out. So it may not have changed much.

If prob put msu at the top, us second. Even though wisky dick beat us I think we are the better team. I think we beat them at home and we beat them on a neutral court more than they would beat us. Wisky Dick third and osu fourth

No wonder why Fran was ticked!

I think Minnesota will make the NCAA Tournament. I think any team that has to play them in the 8-9, 7-10 or 6-11 game has a good chance of exiting the tournament in the 1st round...even if Minnesota is the 11 seed. I like there team. They're just not as good as us IMO and I expect us to sweep them.

I would put Minnesota as the 6th team in as of today. Indiana and Purdue also have a chance IMO. Illinois has to pull a big upset before I can even entertain the idea of them making it...and all that win will do is cancel out the Northwestern giveaway game

They need more than one upset. The Georgia Tech loss has always looked bad, the Oregon loss and Missouri win are both looking worse by the day, and they emerge from the easiest part of their conference schedule on a 2 game losing streak. They are far from impressive and on a downward trend at the same time, not good for tournament hopes.

No arguments from me on this analysis.
