Music City Bowl tickets: starting at $6 on StubHub

The bowl travel experience isn't as "sexy" as it used to be, for most schools.
Look at these examples of B1G schools are the secondary market price for game tickets.

On StubHub, the Cotton Bowl (USC vs Ohio State) tickets start at $55 (plus fees).
Pac12 schools are well known for not travelling, and Buckeye fans have expectation of "CFP or bust."

Orange Bowl (Connie vs Miami) tickets are starting at $75 (plus fees).
Fiesta Bowl (PSU vs Washington) tickets are starting at $60 (plus fees).

Next bowl tier:
Outback (Michigan vs South Carolina) = $65 (plus fees)
Holiday (Sparty vs Wazzu) = $29 (plus fees)

The Pinstripe Bowl is $89 (plus fees), but that's asking and the StubHub marketplace is non-existant, because you can still buy thousands of tickets on Ticketmaster, starting at $55 (plus fees).

The market is no longer willing to spend thousands of dollars (tickets, transportation, hotel, etc.) in annual bowl trips.
The exception being the Outback Bowl and Iowa.
What's not to like about Tampa/St.Pete and New Year's Eve in Ybor City?!

The UIowa is out of sync with the market, charging $110 for bowl tickets in the end zone and third level.
The ticket office needs to talk to someone from Pappajohn on the free market and setting a market price.

College football will be fine, because of the millions/billions collection in TV rights.
The bowls, itself, and their respective Chamber of Commerce, may need to do some reassessing.

Times have changed. The experience of watching games at home have surpassed watching them in person. Just wait until 5 years from now when we're all wearing VR headsets in our living rooms and actually down on the field watching the game unfold right in front of us. Believe me, its coming.

I never even thought of this! That’s a great idea!! I hope they start working on this technology sooner

What I see happening is the days of giant stadiums holding 70 thousand or basketball ball arenas holding 20 thousand are coming to an end. More intimate arenas holding 20 thousand football fans or 10 thousand basketball fans will be coming more popular. (I’m making up numbers but you get my point)

Look at the Colorado basketball game last night, it was a much smaller venue and packed. It was louder in that game in a “neutral” venue than a home game. I’m all for this.

One problem with most professional sports is too many games. 162 games in MLB, 82 in the NBA and NHL. That's ridiculous. They all hit a point where the season becomes stale. The NFL has it about right, though they could still carve off a couple.

When the world series ends in November and the NBA and NHL go into June, they've overstayed their welcome. Scarcity increases value.

Sort of like "This Is Spinal Tap"...

Marty: "In the past, Tap was playing 12000-seat arenas, 15000-seat arenas. Now they're playing to audiences of 1200, 1500. Is their audience shrinking?"

Ian (scoffing): "Oh, no, no...not at all. Their audience is becoming more selective"

Shrug. My living room and my TV are nice. You have to give me something better than that to make the trip, buy tickets, etc. Professional teams are slowly starting to realize this and provide experiences that can compete with that. Most colleges don't care...they think they can just roll the ball out there and 70k will show up. Hopefully they'll learn.

I used to wait in anticipation all year to go to games, even though it’s a 5 hour drive and hotel room for my kid and me.

Now, with huge HD screens and decent tickets creeping up on $100 a piece, motel rooms at $150, and super cramped seating in shitty weather, that ten hours in a car doesn’t seem as attractive. The tipping point for me was the NW game last year. That’s when I started to lose enthusiasm. You could tell that Kirk has zero drive or incentive to change things up or try to win that ninth or tenth game every year which are the ones that count. When Baby Kirk got hired I thought for a few minutes there would be some life breathed back into the 3 page playbook, but it didn’t take long to figure out that’s not going to happen. Call me a fair weather fan if you want, but when Iowa has a coach who decides 6-6, 7-5 isn’t good enough with the money and facilities Iowa has...then I’ll make it a priority to get back and spend my (admittedly insignificant) money on this team. Hayden Fry didn’t hit 10 wins every season but he sure as hell didn’t have the catatonic, “definition of insanity” type attitude towards winning that daddy Ferentz does. No drive, no fire, no accountability. As long as you keep those three things in place you’ll have what we have.

Don’t feel bad as I am also suffering from KF fatigue. You don’t have to apologize for being a true hawkeye fan. Times have changed and the days of having expectations have gone by the wayside in Iowa. As far as attitude goes we are almost back to pre-Hayden days. The ole fox said it best about the loser mindset that was in Iowa City when he first got here. He had to convince the fan base that Iowa was good enough to make it to the Rosebowl. “Meh” would be the mindset now. If Iowa wns great but if they lose who really gives a crap. Just watch the game because there isn’t much else to do in Iowa.

In fairness to some of the fans the KF fatigue has overcame them and besides it’s not going to change things by getting on here and griping all the time. I know it may help get personal frustrations out by venting but there comes a point where you just say f*ck it and just accept thing you can’t change and watch the games, don’t watch the games anymore and just do other things with your family and/or friends or start to follow only the most successful football programs like Ohio State, Alabama, etc. The fan bases from those two team honestly expect to be in the national title hunt every year.

Just maybe there will be some truth to those who point out that the Iowa players are very young and that next year we will yield some good fruit and be set for a couple of years, but maybe they are just high on pot and alcohol throw in a little meth. o_O

Times (and technology) aren't the only things that have changed, people have as well. Many are perfectly happy with a digital experience rather than the real one...be it a sporting event or a relationship with other people.

I love the pic on my HD big screen. But there's nothing like being in the 35th row of Kinnick when the place explodes.

Dude, you are so on the money with this post. My nephew has 600+ friends on facebook, but 95% of those friends he has never met in real life. They are all friends from xbox or playstation gaming. He never hangs out with anyone, just gets online to chat with his peeps. It's sad. Today's technology is going to make a whole lotta 40 year old virgins.

I get what you're saying. But 40 year old virgins... are the least of our worries. We're approaching 20 years of easily manipulated bots...who are convinced that they're hip/enlightened/and educated...and yet they lack the most fundamental grasp of socio-economic constructs and more importantly...the ability to think for themselves and analyze things objectively. They've been infused with false confidence and certainty in the place of intellectual integrity...and making them feel good, is the best way to secure their allegiance.

Man I wish I was in Nashville right now, I'd be walking around in shorts with temperatures in the 20's with a high of 38 tomorrow.

Then why do you bother talking about their every move as a Hawkeye? You sound like an old codger upset about aging and change. NK launches a rocket at IC who is going to defend it?

You must be miserable watching sports now. No wonder KF and FM struggle so much with the crap they have to deal with. Just give them participation ribbons and thtow out depth charts and rotate starters and all will be good. No wonder we are mediocre. Everyone is. Darn CJ was such a slacker. Laziest qb since Fick.

Because Kirk's guys seem to buck the trend. They work hard, have ballz and generally make us proud. We may criticize his conservative offense, but the way he develops his players into pretty solid people is admirable.

He lets us see what he wants,us to see. He recruits certain types of players. Either way they are still the generation you seem to loathe.

It's more the people that groomed them... I know plenty of bright millenials who have their sheet together. Others have been "ruined" by the ever-expanding amoeba of "political correctness". Best stop there as politics are a no-no.

Forgive my ramble last night... the frustration of visiting a friend dying of cancer combined with a couple of liquid pain killers loosened my judgement.

You're comparing VR to 3D televisions and saying I'm comparing apples to oranges, lol. I never said it was going to be the end all, but its 100% going to dramatically change home entertainment as we know it.

I disagree. Part of the home viewing experience is watching it with other people. With VR you have to be totally disconnected from anything else and totally invested in it. If anybody has kids under 10 they know that's basically impossible.

There is great potential in VR but the customer has to change as much as that technology has to change.

Sorry to hear about that...:(
