You know, I've met the Coug a few times. Mellencamp is a good guy and he writes a decent song, but he just couldn't stay relevant. I think it is the E. Street Band that kept me going whereas he never had a band identity.
And I see him talk every now and again about how there are people whose careers are so much bigger and he thinks he is just as good. Everyone knows he is talking about me, and everyone knows he is jealous.
I think the same thing is going on with the Hawkeyes. The nation looks at us and they're jealous of what we have. So when we actually have a great team, they have to tear us down because we can't have everything and a great team.
Think about it. We have a coach that everyone loves. Literally, the entire state loves this guy. He shuns high profile college gigs and NFL coaching vacancies to stay in li'l ole Iowa.
We have amazing fans that sell out every game and travel well to every stadium. The white out looked like someone had taken a **** in the entire corner when we were at Penn St. We have a great environment, great game day pageantry.
Sure we had some off the field issues, but think about it compared to other schools where this is much more common. Those individuals who had transgressions which were not alcohol related were swiftly and judiciously kicked off the team.
We have a beautiful stadium and beautiful facilities. We are the only game in the entire state. We have players who publicly love their coach. A coach who publicly cries during happy post game interviews. It is a mutual admiration society at the Hayden Fry football complex.
So when you have the classy program with the great fans and tradition and a coach everyone wants, it is easy to like them when we are competitive but not ultimately all that relevant year in and year out in league championships, much less national championships. I mean, by the time game 7 of the big ten season happens we are usually fighting for slot 3 or 4... competitive but not relevant. We aren't threatening. So we are easy to like.
Now, it is a different story. We can't have it all. That is why no one is rooting for us, or fighting for us. We'll get too big for our britches.
So Hawk fans everywhere... when we win next week, and when we win in Columbus, and when we clinch an undefeated season and win the Rose Bowl, make them hate us more. Win with distinction and class.
You'll notice I don't ever talk about The Coug, I just keep selling out a week at Giants Stadium quietly.
