MTSU - Wish List

I really think it’s time some people to move on from ISU. Here’s a few things I hope to see against MTSU following our bye this weekend.

-Health. Hope to get Jackson, Brents, Hankins, Merriweather back for the Michigan game. If they are ready for this one that’s great. Don’t want to see any other injuries in this one.

-Goodson 15+ touches and first college touchdown. Let’s continue to see what this kid can do.

-LaPorta get some targets. What the heck are we really going to waste his redshirt as a goal line package only guy? He was supposed to be quite the receiving threat, let’s see what he has in game action.

-3 or more sacks for the defense. Haven’t gotten home enough this year, time to get some sacks.

-Lattimore, Nixon or someone step up from the defensive interior and blow a few run plays up in the backfield.

-A few more series for Petras.

Health - I'd give Jackson, Brents, Hankins, Merriweather, and Stone another week to get healed up for the most part. Some guys will need to get out there and knock the rust off.

Goodson should be the #2 back, especially being able to use a non-con as a durability test. I like Young, but I think Goodson has the goods. Zero reason to burn a shirt after a guy has proven he can play. Keep it in your back pocket in case you get hurt at some point.

If any of the last 3 games are an indication, Goodson has a lot of both Wadley and Shonn Greene traits about him. He punishes guys who get in front of him but he also moves laterally. That clown DB this past weekend definitely remembered getting trucked on national TV when he woke up Sunday morning.

That’s what we want out of running backs. When Shonn Greene has the ball people knew it was gonna hurt.

Agree. The bye week definitely came at the right time, and this MTSU game hopefully will provide an opportunity for a lot of guys to play.

I don’t think Goodson will ever be mistaken for a power guy. That play on the sideline was probably more of a product of the guy thinking he was just going to go out of bounds and Goodson doing a great job of finishing the run.

I think the Wadley comparison is pretty good, but I think Goodson may even have a bit more top end speed, and as you noted eventually (with Doyle’s help) might be a little better suited in between the tackles.

I agree that Sargent and Goodson should be the two main backs with the tiger two occasionally mixing in.

with the clock management issues why not just go no huddle. Nip that problem in the butt right now and give the league one more thing to have to be ready for.

On defense, the first three games they concentrated on getting their starters (and replacements for injured players) repetitions in the base defense. I see the defensive back seven continuing to do that. The defensive line needs to work their second string players into the rotation more and selectively get aggressive with the starting linemen pressuring the quarterback.

On offense they already have a nice rotation going. Part of that is by design, but injuries on the offensive line have made a necessity of getting guys playing time. Iowa's offense needs to take over the game, if they can.

Goodson has shown he has the feet like Fred Russell and Jermelle Lewis to do the bend and cut back in the outside zone blocking scheme. The hawk running backs of late except for Wadley have not had that ability as well as a Russell. The cutback run is the built in counter play for teams that like to overplay our blocking schemes.

I guess I was more comparing his style than his build, although as a freshman he’s put over 15 lbs on already and he could easily still grow. His mom even said on Twitter praising Doyle that when he came home she didn’t recognize him at first. 10 more lean pounds and he wouldn’t be far off from a power back.

He definitely doesn’t shy away from contact and that a lot of times will get you an extra yard or two by itself.

I don't understand why we can't get great backs like that more often. Any RB who comes to Iowa should know they have a chance to be the #1 feature of the offense and will be running behind a pretty good line most of the time.

We’re talking about 16-18 year olds here. Not exactly the pinnacle of logic or forward-thinking. Especially when you have “cool” guys like Jim Harbaugh sleeping over.

I would like to see different punt and kick returners, not bad, but keep looking for the next Tim Dwight.

I would love to see Tyrone Tracy or Tyler Goodson get an opportunity to run back punts but if it hasn’t happened yet probably unlikely. Woods sounded confident that Nico will only get better back there.

While I agree that I'd like to see more sacks. I'd be just as happy increasing the number of hurries. Maybe not necessarily getting the sacks, but hitting the QB enough that they can get into his head increasing the likelihood of increased turnovers and/or fumbles.
