MSU Win: What Does It Mean?

So just what does Iowa’s win against Michigan State mean? Here are a few of my thoughts before I drift off into blissful sleep....errr....watch the last drive again.

RECRUITING: Good for the future, but also good for this year. Decommits are becoming more and more commonplace, because more and more kids are committing at an early date. A season like this makes you feel pretty good about the kids you have in the live well staying in the live well. It’s also a real good thing for the juniors who will be seniors for the Class of 2011.

ONE MORE VENUE: Kirk Ferentz now has wins in 10 of the 11 Big Ten stadiums. The lone piece missing on his resume? Ohio State

BCS: Last week, the average computer composite rankings had Michigan State 49th and Louisville 89th. Why does that matter? Cincinnati beat Louisville today, and the Bearcats were .0001 points ahead of Iowa in last week’s BCS poll. Unless the human pollsters downgrade Iowa for ‘winning ugly’ again, they will at least move to 5th in this week’s BCS poll. I am sure they won’t affect USC for their six point home win against Oregon State, because hey, they scored 42 points, right?

TWO WINS FROM PASADENA: I really believe that if Iowa beats Indiana and Northwestern at home these next two weeks, they will have an ‘at worst’ finish of 7-1 in the Big Ten. There is no way, no shot, that Minnesota beats Iowa on November 21st with a Rose Bowl bid on the line, or perhaps even more than that on the line. Get past Indiana and Northwestern, and the game at Ohio State becomes important for the national title picture (I can’t believe I am typing that), but if Iowa were to lose that one and beat Minnesota, they go to the Rose Bowl...yeah, I know that if Ohio State wins out right now, they would have the Rose Bowl tiebreaker over Iowa. But they are not going to win their final three games which are: @PSU, Iowa & @MSU. I think Ohio State beats them the week before the Hawks visit Columbus, and the Buckeye players will know the best they can play for is the Cap One. What is Orlando when you have been in the BCS for so many years in a row? A let down. Also, ‘Two Wins from Pasadena’ would be a sweet Wilco song.

Why would Ohio State have the tie breaker over Iowa if they win out? They would be 10-2, 7-1 and Iowa would be 11-1, 7-1. First tie breaker is overall record, right?

But what do I know, I'm just a band leader.

How does Iowa lose the Rose Bowl bid if OSU wins out? Wouldn't OSU have two losses and wouldn't Iowa have one?

Overall record in the conference, which both teams would be 7-1. Ohio State would have the tie breaker with a win over Iowa. So, they would get the Rose Bowl.

Agreed on all points. Especially about Pasadena. I hope we find a way to not play to the level of NW and IND, but not sure about what the injuries will do. Our depth will be tested. As for BCS, it says a lot that the #6 team was an underdog on the road, doesn't it?

Tiebreakers in the Big Ten for the automatic BCS berth (typically Rose Bowl)

1. Head-to-head (we have it now over Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan State)
2. Overall record

If we were to continue to win heading into our meeting with tOSU, and they win out, too, through then, then if the Buckeyes do win, the Buckeyes would be in the driver's seat to go to the BCS (Rose). However, Iowa can still go to Pasadena with a win over Minnesota and a Buckeye loss to Michigan. Still, if Iowa wins in the 'Shoe, Iowa clinches the berth to the BCS (Rose or National Championship). We'd have tiebreakers over everyone.

Didn't I read your posts somewhere on the BTX? Like...GoHawks! or sign request for next show, "In Heaven There Is No Beer"!

On recruiting.....can you get a better advertisement for a program and a coach than that game and then the postgame interviews with Kirk and Ricky?
Kirk is in tears, mainly due to his pride in his players but also due to his concern for his injured guys...
Ricky repeatedly gushes about how the players want to win for Coach Ferentz, they love Coach Ferentz, ect...it is obvious how much these players revere Kirk Ferentz...what parent and recruit out there would not want to be a part of this Hawkeye Family?

Lets just hope the injury bug does not throw a monkey wrench in this dream season...we have been relatively healthy in terms of losing guys to huge injuries since the season started(Chaney), but now Dace joins him on the sideline, and we must pray that ARob,Colin and Greenie are ok.

This season is different from '02 because we had already lost once and were on the outside looking in. While we still need a team to lose, playing in the title game is a distinct possibility whereas in '-02 it was a long shot.

Anyone know the best way to Columbus? :)

It is in their hands... that is amazing enough on its own... but the rest of the teams we face I do not feel are as good as the teams that we have faced. That brings me a bit of inner peace. Not much, but some...

Yes, Iowa now has "control of its own destiny" as it were, meaning they simply have control of the Big Ten race, having a 1/2-game lead on tOSU, a virtual 2-game lead on Penn State and virtual 2-1/2-game lead on Michigan State now. (Virtual as in having the head-to-head tie-breaker.)
