MSU McCall

Apparently he's no longer a MSU committ and has an official with the Hawks. Per an MSU supporter on the other site

I see he is visiting tomorrow. He has a pretty low gpa. If he can keep his grades up and comes to IA, he could be good, real good. Then in 3 years he would bail on us, after all we helped him become, take the draft and play for the Jets. Oh wait I had better slow down, it's just a visit.

I'm about 85% sure we'll get him. He was in town for the PSU game earlier in the year and was impressed by the atmosphere (though he had to stay muted in his comments because he was still a solid MSU commit). His coach is from Iowa and his coach's father is Ed Morrisey who played for the Hawks during the 70s. What happened was, he went and talked to the MSU coaches and said he wanted to take some officials to see if he had a better shot at playing early somewhere else. When he asked to look around, they did him one better and pulled the scholarship.

His film is pretty impressive, and he's a big body (5-11 210). I postulated about a month ago that the coaches were making a conscious effort to skew the offensive recruiting to a power running game (Blythe, Donnal, Walsh, Coker, working on Coe, Tra Carson, and Cyrus Kouandjio). He'd fit very well in that kind of scheme based on his footage. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if he committed over the weekend - if for no other reason than to be sure he's playing ball somewhere at a competitive level next year.

The best thing about McCall potentially committing, besides the fact that he appears to be a quality back, is that Iowa will then have the luxury of waiting for a second running back to commit and will not have to panic and sign someone for depth reasons.

I kinda disagree. The departure of Hampton has moved our recruiting priority from 2 RBs to 3. We'll still want a top-talent RB to be the 2nd this year, then we can wait on the 3rd.

Actually I have tried to read up on the backs we have verbals from and I kind of see some of the same things I think the coaches are seeing. Granted they will be freshman, but given a year or two and we could be producing another highly drafted RB.

Good looking films. I think he runs with an unorthodox style, but aggressive, and I like angry, aggressive runners (like Jewel). Sort of seems like a Thomas Jones style with his arms, IMO. Good find.

My thoughts exactly, he runs really angry. I was bummed that we lost Gordon but if we can pick up Lafayette Pitts and Mikail McCall this weekend (both are visiting) I'd be saying "Melvin What?" by Monday evening.
