Mr. Davis

The sweet 16 in his last year is my greatest Hawkeye memory. Actually it might be secondary to them playing Kentucky close with Woolridge on the team but that's more of a sentimental thing. Me and one of my best friends watched that one in the basement of his parents house going crazy. Too bad they lost.

And 11 years later he finally is appreciated by Hawkeye fans.

I think most hawk fans loved Mr. Davis before we heard they were not extending his contract and I was shocked that bowlsby and a few boosters would want him out that way.

I think Mr. Davis should have maybe been counseled to push the recruiting and bring in some top kids. But bowlsby started scheduling a weak non-conf schedule during Mr. Davis's last few years which really lead to the lower attendance numbers.

It wasnt the Drs style

Mr. Davis did the scheduling and scheduled weak teams. Bowlsby took the scheduling away from him and did it himself. Some of Mr. Davis's teams would not have made the NCAA tournament if the strength of schedule would have been considered. Back them 20 wins got you in the tournament.

Davis always did the scheduling. It was in his contract he signed under Bump.

Davis refused to upgrade the schedule. As the story goes, at the annual end of the season meeting after the '98 season, Bowlsby tried to take the scheduling away from Davis & Davis threw his contract in Bowlsby face. That incident along with a few other things led to Bowlsby's decision not to renew Davis' contract.

In '98, Indiana & Iowa finished tied for fifth in the conference with 9-7 records. Iowa won the tie-breaker and got a first round bye in the BTT. Indiana beat Ohio State in the first round & lost to Purdue in the quarterfinals. Iowa got blown out by eventual champion Michigan in the quarterfinals.

Indiana finished 20-12 & made the tournament. Iowa finished 20-11 but did not make the tournament because of an awful non-conference schedule. The '98 team became the first Big Ten team to have a winning conference record & not make the tournament since the expansion to 64 in '85. I think it has happened since but I am not sure.

Obviously that level sucked. I am glad we brought in Alford and Lick who actually took us to another level???

Mr. Davis was a good coach and could have been a great one. He lost a number a games when he refused get out out of the zone when they were being torched. His zone was usually everyone in the lane. The press worked at times, but he would keep pressing when the other team was breaking it and shooting layups. I think he would still be there if he got Raef.

The Hawks went 9-7 in B1G play in 2006-2007 and didnt even make the NIT.
