More stats: Iowa needs more YPC

Here's a stat, yards per attempt rushing, that really needs to improve if we want to see better results on offense. Iowa's average rank going back to 2008 is 72nd compared to Wisconsin at 27th. I don't follow it that much anymore but, last I checked, Iowa puts about the same number of OL in the NFL as Wisconsin.

So how can a team that traditionally has pretty good OL average 72nd over 11 years? Maybe teams have figured out how to defend our blocking schemes, idk. We had better results earlier in KF's tenure I think. I wish I could get stats on outside zone vs inside zone, per attempt, etc. and maybe audible vs non-audible plays. Also, it seems like Wisconsin can get pretty creative, sometimes putting 7 lineman out there.

Rank: Yards per rush attempt
2008 Iowa 24 Wisconsin 22
2009 Iowa 102 Wisconsin 40
2010 Iowa 54 Wisconsin 11
2011 Iowa 72 Wisconsin 8
2012 Iowa 99 Wisconsin 11
2013 Iowa 77 Wisconsin 2
2014 Iowa 76 Wisconsin 1
2015 Iowa 59 Wisconsin 94
2016 Iowa 52 Wisconsin 71
2017 Iowa 100 Wisconsin 26
2018 Iowa 82 Wisconsin 13

Definitely some weirdness in those #'s. '08 might have been one of the best Hawk teams ever, but the QB struggles early on caused early season losses. But '09 was great (thanks, D), and the rush avg was lousy (I am sure you would see that in '04 as well). We got Wisc in '15, and the rush avg would have predicted that. But '16 was disappointing.

The numbers so far this year don't look good, but they have been very nice the last 2 games (and would have been good against N Ill if not for phantom penalties and garbage time). We need to start breaking some big ones, but I think they are close.

Also, for those that have not seen Leistikow's piece from early in the week, over the past 2 weeks Iowa is averaging over 7 yards per play, and about 8 yards per play on 1st down. They also have nice balance on 1st down (60% run, 40% pass). If we continue to attack downfield (Stanley currently 39th in nation in yds/attempt at 8.2, the highest such number for any KF-era QB), and we start breaking some big runs, things could get fun.

This is telling. We'd probably have 100 more rushing yards if it weren't for dumb holding calls and a few pretty iffy illegal blocks below the waist. They moved bodies against a solid front vs Wisconsin. If they can keep that up, the rushing numbers will start to pile up.
