More emphasis on defense and less on

You watch the games - so how do you think the half court offense looks? More often then not IMO it looks pathetic.

I'm not a basketball player or coach. Just a fan. That's why I'm asking the question. Am I to believe all the couch coaches over the tv guys?

One thing I do know is iowa scores a lot of baskets off assists in most games. I realize they aren't all out of the half court set, but many are. I would say our biggest weakness on offense is feeding the low post.

The "blowhards" are people who like talking basketball. Believe who you want to believe and don't say anything if you don't have an opinion to add because saying some other guy is smart really doesn't add anything to the discussion and doesn't really ******* matter.

But yeah, former pro basketball coaches probably know the game more than fans but Iowa fans watch more Iowa basketball games then the coaches do so both opinions can have some validity (for instance, Dakich said Woodbury isn't a good passer and it was based off of one bad pass. Woody is a tremendous passer who has led plenty of fast breaks and found plenty of open shooters. I would completely feel comfortable showing Dakich plenty of examples where this is true.)

As far as half court offense goes, Iowa is a tremendous cutting team and is very good at drawing fouls. We also get some good looks that we don't make because our shooting is streaky.

I'm all for bombing away early in the game from three if the shots are there. If you're hot you blow them out if not then you stop taking them.

Unfortunately Iowa hasn't been making them, not just one guy multiple guys and it is frustrating to see guys continue to bomb away as you say. Get in a rhythm with the midrange game and then step back and not force it. Wide open or not, if you can't make it, you are forcing it.

If the 3 is there take it, otherwise, get the ball inside and get to the line....We will see the same attack as in other games....I want to see no second chances for Indiana, get every damn rebound and get the ball up the court...attack, attack, attack (but, of course under control)....Kids need some swagger back...defensively, we have to stop penetration from Yogi, and that could be a tall task...we failed against Minnesota at times, but then again they really didn't need to drive since everything that went up went in....Jesus H Christ, there are too many quick guards in the league...everyone else except the Hawks...

the movement in the half court is terrific with the multiple cuts and all the curls. where it sometimes breaks down is when the pg (gesell is getting better at this, clemmons not so much) dribbles too much and the first pass doesn't come until after 5sec of dribbling around. our pgs are still developing when it comes to getting the team into the flow of the half court o.

some of that is because the first cutters don't have good looks and the pass would be forced (and gesell is great about not forcing it). some of that is because if marble and white are on the bench, things get sluggish.

the other problem occurs when guys start deferring to dev, but then again, he's the best on the team at creating, and he's the senior leader.

it's not the scheme, its the personnel.

Playing fast......Fran needs to relook at his style. Poor/quick shots put us in bad positions.
I don't mind the play fast...as a coach at that level you pick a style and recruit to it, so that is a non-issue to me. Now I would like to see more emphasis on team play. What I mean by that is find the hot pony and ride it till it buckles. Right now it seems in my opinion...that Fran rides Devyn at the expense of others. I love watching Creighton play...they have a Wooden award player. Very seldom do you see things or run things specifically for Doug. He gets his points because he is that good and he just allows the game to flow. Teams pay too much attention to Doug and other guys will kill you (ask Nova). Worry about other guys on the team and Doug can score 35. We rely on Devyn, and the rest is very unclear. I feel defining some roles and letting the game come to us offensively would help this team out. Maybe that is not what others see...???
