Moral Victories aside...

Some good things in the second half from Iowa when some of the big guns were on the bench. A lot of fight. If the guys keep their heads up, things will get better.

Down 20+ is a hard thing to come back from, but Iowa got it down to 8 pts under 3 mins to go.

As critical as I can be, and I am, the glaring difference in a Fran coached team compared to Lick: mentality. Lickliter coached teams would have folded and gave up down 20+. Fran instills a different attitude...a positive attitude. We just need to get a lot more talent on this team.

We really need an upset early in the season if possible. I think it could do wonders for the team's confidence.

I was pleasantly surprised by Archie in the second half. Cartwright has got to tighten up his handle or he is going to get abused in the big ten. It was a fairly entertaining effort in the second half by the Hawks. If Stoermer hits that three and it goes to 7, it might have gotten interesting.

Good effort, tho, and should prove to be a useful tourny for Iowa, imo. Bama will probably run also, and we need the practice.
Win one game,and get a tan,boys.

Iowa has to do three things better to move forward this season:
1. Quit giving up wide open 3's
2. Dominate the defensive rebounds, send all five guys if we have too
3. Shoot more shots at the 12-15 ft. range, Iowa's shooters are deadly from there

According to the Xavier radio guys, Xavier only had 5 offensive rebounds. Sounds like they did well there. And Iowa must have had around 17 offensive rebounds.

One thing I appreciated and now miss from both Mr. Davis and SA, is that their teams rebounded. For me, that is a MUST. I could care less how many points we score if we dominate on the glass.

That is kinda funny because during the in-game blog, it was repeated how Iowa was giving up a ton of second looks during the game. Against SDSU they gave up too many 2nd chance opportunities that help cost that game.

That's really not true.

There were plenty of times when Lick coached teams were down big and made the final score look closer than it really was. The fact that we some what got close at the end really doesn't mean much at all actually.

I agree. The Hawks shot just 35% from the field. If they shot 45%, which isn't great, they win. They are showing a lot of fight and they could have had 6 guys in double figures very easily. Team effort and Fran is not afraid to use his bench. That will go a long way when the B-10 season comes around. They may not be great this year, but they are much better.

Everyone loves Gatens, and he does provide leadership...that said, I would like May to get the majority of the looks. Gatens is a very solidly built spot-up shooter, but he has never been very effective at attacking the basket and getting to the line.

Also, Iowa needs someone to take the lead at PG and take over that position. Cully was much more assertive last yr as a true frosh. THat should clear up the wing play. Not sure how ready Melsahn B. is for D-I right now. Perhaps a little more Archie/Brommer and less MB.

Ultimately, some of this cannot be predicted. Struggles at PG, how well MB will play when the real bullets are flying. THe coaches are getting the feel for this team, too.

It does if the lick teams were clawing back bc they didn't want the embarrassment and Fran's team is clawing back bc they actually think they can, and want to, win the game.

Not so far he hasn't, true. Be interesting to see what a year more maturity, 15 less pounds, and hopefully a more open floor will do for him.

I don't know what this means.

It means that when Lick was coach the only motivation the players had to make comebacks was to save face, not because they actually thought they could win the game. It goes along with the change in mentality everyone is yapping about.
