Money doesn't talk, it swears

Bob Dylan said that.

If Iowa opens up the purse strings there is no coach that is off limits.

So here is my short list in order of preference.

Bruce Pearl
Scott Drew
Mark Turgeon
Keno Davis

The Texas guys in particular I feel are more than likely. They aren't making a ton of money. They are in a state with three NBA teams and three other conference teams in the state, and in the case of UT and TTU, one could say higher profile schools.

They are both midwest guys and have rebuilt programs.

It wouldn't surprise me if Barta goes right to Keno, but if he doesn't, I suspect Drew or Turgeon might be our next coach.

I'd take Turgeon over Keno any day ; He'd be one of the first to get a call !

If Keno is hired, Barta has failed miserably.

I'll say it again, hiring Keno Davis scares the heck out of me. He had ONE big year at Drake, which was based on what Mr. Davis set up for him. Keno is yet to build a program. I'm not saying he will fail at Providence, but he is VERY unproven at this point, especially the way Providence finished the season this year, and that is Keno's second year there.

I just have a bad feeling about a Keno hire. Gut feeling.

My choices, in a particular order, would be Pearl, Lavin, Drew, Turgeon, Davis....and as a wild card Knight.....maybe pipe dreams to some.....but I would feel confident saying the hire WILL come from that group of individuals....

If you're Barta, you need to think BIG. Not to say that they will say yes, and not to say that you can afford them. But, if you don't pursue them, you will never have a chance. And in the end, they might just be interested. I don't get the big love fest for Keno. He had a great season at Drake (1 season) after his father retired. But this year he's 4 - 12 in the Big East and 12 - 19 for the season. Not exactly a steller record. The year before he arrived at Providence they were 6 - 10 in conference and 15 - 16 for the season. In Keno's first year they were 10 - 8 in conference and 19 - 14 for the season and an appearance in the NIT. He hasn't, with the exception of the 1 season at Drake had tremendous success. Doesn't mean that it won't happen and can't happen. But for Iowa to hang their future on his resume, it doesn't exactly WOW me.

I have never been all that impressed with what Keno has done to date. He may turn out to be a good coach eventually, but he has yet to prove himself. I would much rather have someone like Lavin. He is a proven coach and recruiter. I also think that his time spent covering the big ten would be a big positive as he has spent a lot of time breaking down all of the teams and players. He knows what the teams are trying to do, as well as what is needed to win in the conference.

I've always been cold on a Lavin hire in the past, but I've warmed up to the idea a little bit recently, after thinking more about his recruiting abilities. I still am not convinced that Lavin is a great COACH, but he would bring in the talent we need to be competetive, I'll say that much. It could maybe set up to be a Raveling/Davis scenario where Lavin is "Raveling" and his successor could take that talent and have big success. Who knows. At least with an infusion of talent, that would help make us respectable again anyway, if nothing else.

I would choose Lavin over Keno Davis at this point, I think.

I agree with this.

The only way a Keno hire makes sense is if Mr. Davis is included (Director of Basketball Operations). Also have former players like Kevin Gamble, Jeff Horner or Kenyon as assistance. I could envision something like this being a huge positive.

Keno success at Drake is due in large part to his father Mr. Davis.

If not Pearl, then Scott Drew would be a great hire. Does it get any worse than what he inherited at Baylor? Players committing murder and coaches trying to cover it up!!!

Keno needs to establish his name before he can be seriously considered as a possibility. He's only three years into his career as a head coach. If he proves himself to be a good head coach - and I believe he will, then I'm sure he'd love a chance to come back to his alma mater. But that time is definitely not now.
