Momentum, the play that changed it all

MSU misses their second FG of the first half and trails going into halftime. D comes out and holds Sparty to a 3 and out and King returns the punt to 40 yard line. All the momentum was ours and we had a huge opportunity to grab hold of control of the game.

Roughing the kicker penalty instead leads to automatic 1st down and ultimately 3 points and a tie game.

I know there's still plenty of time at that point but man what an opportunity lost on a dumb play.

I was at the game and it happened to be playing on FS1 so I watched it and to be honest I had kind of forgot how big that was with all of the excitement of the 4th.

Maybe.....but you can't assume everything else would have played out the same way. MSU may still have won the game.

It was big because sparty got more plays in against the defense and we also lost really good field position. Eventually after that penalty sparty punted to about the Iowa 15 yard line where the offense was a conservative 3 and out iirc

A friend at work and Ohio State Buckeye fan came up as soon as he saw me and asked why our offense played so conservative? He added that your defense was outstanding. My brother asked the samething when he called me. Old Kirk? That could have been one of the answers. Few passes to our number one receiver. Few quarterback runs that worked so well for us throughout the year. Few of those patented QB roll outs and a pass to the Tight end ten yards out or the wide receiver ten more yards further down field. That play is usually very successful. Just damn is all I can say. Why did Kirk let that five yard penalty change his mind on going for it on fourth down? I would have liked to have seen him do it. Are we to assume that his was going to run the ball on fourth and four?

Yeah I was very disappointed in the end results but not disappointed in the effort our players put out. I wanted to cool down a little before posting anything on here.

Congratulations to them for being invited to the Rosebowl. I would not be surprised if we lay the wood to Standford. I for one will be hoping like hell the MSU pounds Alabama into the ground which would only prove Alabama didn't belong in the playoff.

Go hawks!!!!! We should be setting pretty to start next season and no doubt be ranked in the top ten to start the season.

I'm no football expert but I believe a certain Mr. Shilique Calhoun had a lot to do with it.

The problem with a close loss is that you can always look back on 5 to 10 plays and play the "what if" game. When you win, you just don't care about the missed opportunities. Looking back is pointless.

Moving forward to Stanford is what we need to focus on.....Our damn kids played their hearts out, MSU wasn't flashy by any means, each team made mistakes, didn't capitalize on each others mistakes, it just came down to Iowa being gassed at the end and they damn near pulled it off....They learned a lot, and I agree, they will come out and lay the wood to Stanford..

agreed completely

The multiple times they gained yards after first contact on the last drive didn't help.

well, by ultimately do you mean...

MSU eventually punted again on that drive, but Iowa got the ball inside the 20 instead of the 40, the Iowa punted it back and ultimately MSU kicked the FG.

It's over. Let it go. Obsessing over it will never change the outcome.

How is one simple thread/comment about a game changing play obsessing?

I went to the game Saturday, traveled Sunday and watched the replay yesterday. Thus I really hadn't spent much time on this site talking about a game that happened 2 days ago and made one comment about a play that I thought changed the game.

So go back to being your usually ****** self and I'll leave it at that.

This is so very true,a play here or a penalty there makes a world of difference in a close game.Saying that I thought it should of been a 5 yard penalty not 15.IMO

There have been numerous threads and posts clutching pearls about woulda-coulda-shoulda. I wasn't referring specifically to you.

That was a BS call to be sure. As were many other no-calls and fluky occurrences which could have changed the result.

The point is that it's over, we don't have time machines, and even if we did, chaos theory dictates that aside from a definite game clinching play, it is impossible to know what would have followed a particular play.

Look, I don't care if you guys want to spend time and energy thinking about what could have been. The point is that it's not going to change anything. I'm sure the refs will blow it several times in the Rose Bowl too. It's like a missed FG or whiffed tackle. You gotta move on.

The punt block attempt may have been where the New Kirk actually worked against us. But, overrall, this season, New Kirk was a net gain so I'll take it.

New Kirk goes to the Rose Bowl(!) as a consolation prize.

New Kirk is way better than Old Kirk.

Football is nearly impossible to officiate perfectly so calls will go against your team. Win by a lot and it doesn't matter.

The key to that was just michigan state was more physical than us. They played our game a tiny bit better. Not many teams can do that to us. Oh well.
