You're power rankings look pretty solid.

The only thing I might do is swap Northwestern and Minnesota.

The think Fitz is a better coach than the Admiral.

If you're two upsets pan out it would
  • Make the west very interesting
  • Vault Illinois(!) to (4-2) (2-1)
Of course Illinois schedule gets tougher-quickly.

I based the power rankings on scoring margins. Minnesota is (+) 4.0 while Northwestern is (-) 1.6

I agree with your top 5 and your bottom 2, but I'd have the rest of them in a different order.

I would have jNW a couple spots higher. They played Michigan very well on defense but the wildcats couldnt muster the 2nd half offense.

Mich St has a good defense but it may be spotty in certain games as other Off Coords get tape on them.

Northwestern is too slow for the kind of offense they have in place. Not enough athletes. Sooner or later, Thorson will get hurt again. They are too one dimensional.

Michigan St. defense is good, but their offense is inconsistant. Both of these teams, in my opinion are on a downward trajectory.
That said, I appreciate and respect your opinions.

At the moment I would have Maryland over Iowa for 5th & 6th based on its win over Texas. I would put Minnesota down around 12 or 13. Looking at their schedule, they're staring at an 0-9 conference record.

Maryland also got beat by a Temple team that sits with a 3-3 overall record. Maryland has been a Jekyl and Hyde type of team this year. This is just my opinion on what has transpired so far based on games played and does not reflect on where these teams will be at the end of the season.

Muddle in the middle: Not a whole lot separating teams #6 through #11.

Assessment more on team quality with a little less emphasis on record. Future schedule not taken into account.

I think your rankings are great. Just have a few disagreements. Thanks for posting. We should do a power ranking thread every week. Makes for good discussions and pissing matches!

I tend to agree with you. We’ll just have to see how it plays out. The cream always rises to the top. As far as team quality goes, I also agree with you there. The team records only reflect the teams standing within the conference. That’s why I base the power rankings based on scoring margin. I will probably tweak that in coming weaks as we get deeper into conference play. I can probably adjust it based on conference play only once we start getting a few more games in. So for now I’m including overall body of work.

Thx! If that’s something that you and others would like to see, I’d be more than happy to keep it updated.

Another thing I noticed. The big difference between this year and last year is all the teams I have listed #4 Wisconsin through #11 Minnesota, have much weaker defenses than last year. Which means the Big 10 is going to lose quite a few bowl games.

Just scoring margin is ok for most of the teams in the list but it doesnt take into account a team playing a weak schedule after a few conf games vs a team playing a tough schedule.

Power rankings should be a good predictor of upcoming games and one metric is going to miss some factors.

Road vs home games vs higher powered teams/lower teams and then figuring in point differential. Mich shouldnt get as much power points crushing a bad Nebby team at home as Mich gets barely beating a better jNW team in Evanston.

Thats' the way I look at it as I would give teams plus or minuses for other factors.

I agree after only 2 or 3 game that the middle of the pack is pretty even. Top 4 (and Iowa just about there) and bottom 4 are pretty set. If the hawks take of next 2 games they might be pushing for Top 4.
