Mock Drafts are Idiotic

Can someone explain to me the point of a “Mock Draftâ€￾? People spend hours researching team needs, player scouting reports, and writing these damn things, then 2 minutes into the draft someone trades up or down to select a player and its over.

I understand scouting players, identifying team needs, and indicating potential fits but beyond that it seems like an enormous waste of time.

Bulaga is a considered to be a fringe first round pick. He would be a good fit for teams A, B, or C all of which are looking to improve their offensive line = Fine

Bulaga is going to go in pick number 26 to the San Francisco 49ers = Idiocy

For some its a hobby. Like they would probably look at grown men playing video games and think the time spent on that is a bit much...or going to bars a few nights a week, or doing a lot of things people choose to do with their free time. To each his or her own.

Times like this, I am glad I am so very, very intelligent.

You see, in times like this, it is helpful to dissect the language. Mock draft. What does that mean? Mock? There is no definition or usuage of the word mock that would incline it to be used to describe a hypothetical chain of selections prior to the actual event.

The word Mock means, and I am quoting my Random House/ Websters dictionary that weighs as much as a horse, "To treat with contempt and ridicule".

So by their very definition, mock drafts are idiotic.

Uh oh...might have gotten a little lazy on this one Ghost. Mock up would most certainly be considered a usage of the word mock.

Definitions of mock up on the Web:

You know what I wanna do to people who think video games are dumb? I wanna select my "Rampage Class" Bling Pro, Increased Exposive Damage, Sit Rep the the TAR rocking the red dot and grenade launcher followed by Aikimbo FMJ Rangers and blow the crap out him.

Mock and mock-up are not the same thing. the -up is a modifier which changes the definition. Just like "shut" and "shut up", or "fired" and "fired-up" do not mean the same thing.

Ommiting the -up from the language is lazy, and changes the definition from "model draft" to "ridiculous draft", just as saying "That stripper got me fired" is lazy and changes the definition if what you mean is "That stripper got me fired-up."

Your original claim that there is no usage of the word mock that would indicate anything other than idiotic has been proven false. Certainly the word mockup (commonly referred to as mock up) is one usage of the word mock. Just as Ghostbusters is one usage of the word ghost.

God, this is less an uniformed post, and more a terrifying indictment on the american education system.

Are you honestly trying to make the argument that word usage is, in part, using a cluster of letters contained within a larger word? WHat is so hard to understand here? Mock-up and mock are two completely different words with two completely different meanings. What you are arguing is synonymous to saying that the word bush wacked means "To cough up phlegm", because it contains the word hack.

Absolutely unbelievable. I started posting in this thread because I thought it was a fun play on language, but now I find myself deeply unsure about the future of Western Civilization.
