Mixed Impression of New Video Boards

Enough talk about the game, let's move to a more important topic.

First off the new ribbon board is awesome. It is an excellent addition to the stadium experience.

Second, the 2 new video boards in the north endzone are also very nice.

Third, it was very noticeable the picture quality is a major improvement over the old scoreboards. The HD looked great on all 3 boards.

Fourth, and the only downer but it's a big one. The main video board, which is in the south endzone, still only shows the game on a small fraction of the screen. I would say 40% of the south video board is dedicated to the live game action and replays. The rest is advertisements and game information (down and distance, timeouts remaining and score). They didn't even go to full or split screens during booth reviews. This was very disappointing and not the improvement we were led to believe from the athletic department.

It only took them until midway through the 2nd quarter to get the score and down and distance on the south board. The Iowa entrance was about as smooth as gravel as well

Yeah that had to be pretty embarrassing for the guys responsible for that. I liked how Witvoet kept going to the mic to tell them to put NIU's points on the board or reduce their timeouts. Somebody needed to let him know the video board wasn't working.

They can delete the dancing helmets as well. For one, the NIU helmet always knocked the Iowa helmet backward. For two, it was generally annoying to look at. Millions of dollars for a crappy screensaver?

The new video boards were a MAJOR upgrade to what they had. The 2 video screens are ribbon boards are night and day better, and the video quality is a huge upgrade on the North end.

So was the enormous Hy Vee ad suppose to pop up when the hawks were walking down the tunnel?

I doubt it, they obviously had several glitches with the board. I am assuming they will clean that up. The one that bothered me the most was the timing of the swarm coming on the field. How in the world did they mis time that by 2 + Min?

I did think it was awesome when they went full wide screen with the board.

I don't care who's paying for the ad.. those ribbon boards should never be solid red in color. No red allowed :)

Maybe the person running the board is kin to Ferentz. So preparation, practice and accountability on how to perform there job is not a requirement to performing their duties.

The writer of Hawk Talk Daily said that a "black box" that was new with the scoreboard update was not working properly. They replaced it with the "old black box" later in the day and that seemed to do the trick. For all of our technological know how, most of the time its human error that gets in the way; in this case, I think it must have been a piece of equipment.

TV timing. The refs told the team at the tunnel that they had to wait 2 minutes to take the field. Press box people didnt get the signal and screwed it all up.

That's football.
