Miller: Winning Perspective

Obviously winning is the most important thing, and that is all that really matters at the end of the day. At least that is all that matters to me. But I think something else that has gotten lost in the shuffle with all the "disappointment" today is guys like Coker, Morris and Dibona getting major PT and experience. And playing well on top of it.
 
I read a post on HR that said the win felt like a loss. I chuckled, but didn't respond. What I wondered was how old the poster is. I'm guessing fairly young, but it doesn't really matter. One thing I've learned from watching Iowa FB these last 7 or 8 years is that we are not a team built on style or flash. I know it's cliche but our total as a team really do exceed the sum of our parts.
 
Today Iowa allowed a lesser team to hang around and it almost cost them the game. Indiana didn't suddenly become a contender, Iowa made them look good.

The week before Iowa put a beating on Michigan State, they had a sloppy game against Northwestern. Iowa got a win today, but there is reason to be concerned.
 
Great article, Jon. The last sentence really sums things up and is truly the right "perspective.". Good win today and Its great to be a Hawkeye!

I don't think this got lost in the shuffle for anyone who really watched the game- the next man in Freshmen did pick it up. Right on bama.

Wanna know what a loss feels like? - go back two weeks and relive the week after the Wisconsin game. That's what a loss feels like. to me anyway. A w, is a w, is a w. And come January, we won't care how we got the Indy W, but just that we got it.
 
Are we really expecting Iowa to steam-roll every single team they play this year?

I'm not.

Look at the 2002 Ohio State squad for example...won close game after close game and they ended up national champs.

I don't remember people complaining last year when we won close ones time and time again.

We had a down game. We took their best shot. We won. Good teams have a way of doing that.

We had one game last year that was comparable to this one. UNI. And that game left plenty of reason to be concerned. So does this one, especially going into a road game with NORTHWESTERN. And given that this isn't the first game this year where we allowed a team to march down the field for what either was or should have been the winning TD, it makes it even more concerning, IMO. Ebert or Dunsmore won't drop those passes next week. But they could very well be just as open.
 
A good summary for putting this win in perspective...thanks...however, Jon, you worry me in your "Best of BigTen" writeup, when twice you referenced how Minn is/was a good bounce-back game for MSU and now and now Illi. Hopefully that cliche doesn't continue to play out going forward.:(

Where's the vaunted D when we need them most?

How does a receiver get wide open in the end zone on 4th and 11 with 28 seconds left? Aren't we supposed to drool over how this defense keeps everything in front of them?

Ugh.
 
Great perspective.

Wisconsin is sitting in a great position to get a Rose Bowl berth and they have 2 one-point wins under their belt.

You think Wisky fans are complaining about how they got in that position? Perhaps, right after those wins yes, but right now, no way.

That D made Indiana go 11 plays on their last drive to get into scoring position...and had the kickoff coverage team done their job, they would have been farther out. Perhaps I look at it incorrectly, but I look at what a group does on the whole. Iowa's D turned in another great game yesterday.

Wisconsin game winning drive, they went for it twice on fourth down, once after being held to a 'three and out'. They made Wisconsin go 15 freaking plays to score a touchdown, and some folks act like that is routine and the defense let down.

Against Arizona, one of the best throwing QB's in the country made an unreal throw that if it was two inches longer, would have been incomplete and if it was a foot shorter, would have been picked off. Sometimes the other team has playmakers too.

No defense can make every play, every time. If this is what you are expecting, it's your perspective that may need an adjustment. Or mine I guess, I could be all wrong.

Arizona, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin all drove down the field on Iowa when they needed too.

The main arguement is that the D'line has not played to their potential this year. They are billed as one of the best D'lines in the country, yet they aren't killing anyone in the running game and QBs have time to throw the ball against them. TFL's, hurries, sacks are average. Yesterday they gave up 20 first downs. They got 1-2 sacks(?) against a team with a stationary QB.

Iowa's defense is average. Good at times, not so good at others. And I think not having Norm is a big problem.
