Will Hawkeyes Be Ranked to Start 2014 Season?Hawkeye Nation

Jon apparently has been busy cleaning up the masterful spam of the site with all his old posts suddenly bumped up to currency but I will share this link to stimulate the discussion on the day of the national championship game.

In short, no, I do not believe Iowa will be ranked at the start of next season. Outside of the fans of the schools involved, no one was really interested in the NIT. So Iowa and Baylor largely were not on anyone's radar. As the NIT champion and thus 69th best team in 2013, Baylor may get some mention when the first rankings come out late this fall, likely in the upper teens to lower 20s. But as a 20-point loser in the NIT, Iowa will get no such love, nor should it, IMHO.

Iowa will need to work its way into the Top 25 during the year. I believe it will with some wins against quality opponents and better success in the conference.

depends on the non-con schedule. when do they release that? we might crack the top25 at some point, but i don't think we'll be ranked come the end of the year. i'm sure some on here do, especially since we're going to the elite 8, you know...

I believe the B1G season did a world of good for this team and believe that they can beat most anybody who is not considered an elite team. Yes, the Hawks lost to Baylor, but they were a pre-season top 15 team and proved that when they are on, they are tough to beat.

As for pre-season polls, I think Iowa will (and should) be in the 'others receiving votes'. The Hawks need to develop the outside shot and need to find someone other than RDM to go to. Right now if he (RDM) is on, the team will be tough to beat. If not, well .. .. we saw what can happen against a really good team like Baylor.

One last thing I noticed on the BtB web site: In their "Odds" article, 7 of the top 31 teams are from the B1G. While it may not be as strong at the top, the B1G will still be strong again next year.

GO HAWKS!!!

"Others receiving votes" (30th) in November. Top 25 (20th-22nd) to start the conference.

Then again, while 90+% of the offense returns and they significantly upgrade the perimeter shooting potential, I hear Fran may be going to Rutgers, which would definitely impact preseason rankings / expectations.

Where are you hearing that? The only place I've seen ANYTHING like that is on the this board.

I think it depends largely on who leaves school early, in the big and nationally.

If Iowa is picked in the top 4 of the league they will be ranked or just outside(next 5) If loads of players return Iowa probably is looking at the 5-6 spot in the big and not ranked with very few mentions.

This past NIT championship game was the most watched NIT championship game in the tournament's history.

There are tons of rankings out there. I suspect Iowa will make the top 25 in some and receive votes in the others. Where we are ranked at the end of the season is what really matters. I do think we will be ranked going into Big 10 play.

If I was to make a prediction, I think we'll be ranked, but just barely. Like maybe 23rd. Bigger question is, can Iowa stay there or move up? Or make the Top 25 if it's unranked in the first poll? Probably in the non-conference.

My bigger concern is where Iowa finishes in the polls. If it's ranked in March or April, then it will have been a nice season.

Iowa players better stop with individual drives to the bucket only to be stuffed or cut off because of Iowa's lack of athleticism. Play as a team. How long does it take for Iowa's moving parts to play as a team?

Iowa may get some loving from pollsters because of their run in the NIT.
Starting out ranked makes it easier for a team to stay ranked at the end of the season. And, as another posted, It's how you end not how you started. How you are ranked at the end of the season determines your seed in the NCAA.

Chirp chirp chirp........crickets? It just wouldn't make sense as Fran has gradually improved this team to a point where in a few years we should be a significant player in the BIG. Rutgers over Iowa I find that highly unlikely that Fran would even be interested.

I think Iowa will be a popular sleeper pick in the B1G next season and I think they will pick up quite a few votes in both polls but not enough to crack the top 25.

What? Duff isn't a reliable enough source? Geez, there's a 4 page thread, still going strong after 5 days explaining it all. All I can say is where there's smoke ... seen it all too often here on HN!

Maybe this will help explain my first post, BrueCrew3 and BigD ... ;)

This past NIT championship game was the most watched NIT championship game in the tournament's history.

According to my sources, it was the 66th most watched program on that evening, coming in just behind a syndicated re-run of CSI. That's pretty impressive.

I would guess we will maybe be I. The others receiving votes category and them with a good start we break I to the top 25. Then we go on a run, ending the season undefeated and national champions.

Yes.... team with 25 wins and a .500 conference record returns 93% of scoring and 91% of rebouding.

Somewhere between 21st and 25th in preseason polls.

I say 'Others receiving votes' - possibly about #27 or #28.

But, after doing well in pre-season with a relatively strong SOS and going 11-7 in the Big Ten with some big wins, they will be in the Top 20 for about 10 weeks of the season. An NCAA bid will be awarded to the Hawkeyes.
