Miller: Will Big Ten Scheduling Usher End of CyHawk Game?

A really interesting topic to say the least. I would love to enter the B10 3-0 every year, but I don't get exited about beating the Missouri St's of the world. Beating ISU is a great feeling even though I think we should every year. I honestly would miss the CyHawk game, yet I would be able to get used to not having one.

Would how hard the ncaa comes down on OSU be a factor? If OSU was not in the picture, could teams afford to schedule cupcakes in non-conference games, with OSU being the only team from the conference being a national contender?

If u go 3-0 in non conference and 7-2 in B10 u r likely in BCS unless two other teams havebsame or better record and get picked over u.

If u go 12-1 or 13-0 in B10 with B10 title game win, chances are decent u get to NC game just as they r in SEC

The legislature thing was a threat in the 1970's. It's not something that ever happened nor would it now.

Are you sure about that? This is all about money. The Iowa/ISU game is about the only game every other year that ISU is guaranteed to sell out. If ISU loses that game, Pollard, the new ISU pres., and the BOR will be whining to Des Moines and the legislature and or the Governor will try to have something to say about it, because they will feel sorry for ISU losing that revenue.

I would hate to see us drop ISU from our schedule. This game has a huge impact on the Iowa economy and is great for the fan base of each team.

Would you rather see a game against schools like Maine or some directional school? We don't even sell out those kind of games. The Hawks don't run from anybody, especially the Clones.

There is language in that contract where either team can opt out, legally, in the instance where the number of conference games they play, changes.

Iowa State shares some gate with Iowa for that game and vice versa. ISU has a better deal, but if ISU can get 44,000 fans to come to a home game in September against a MAC team, even after the buyout for the game, ISU keeps the entire gate. It wouldnt be as much as when they host the Iowa game, but you have to look at it over two years.

Two home games and all the financial upside that goes with that vs
One home game every other year with Iowa, even though they do get some compensation from the gate when its at Iowa.

I don't like that Iowa plays ISU every year. It costs the Hawks money when we play in Ames and the Cyclones get a huge payday when they come to Kinnick. Plus it divides the state. I would rather we cultivated our new rivalry with the "hated" Boilermakers.

I would like to see ISU only scheduled for a series or two each decade. I like it when Iowa plays other BCS conference teams and with going to three non-cons with ISU already locked into one that pretty much eliminates playing other BCS teams because Iowa usually books an FCS team and a mid-major team. Relegate the Cy-Hawk series to once or twice every ten years and then book other BCS teams the years we don't play ISU.

I really don't understand why we would consider dropping isu just because we play 9 conference games. We play 8 now, and of the 4 open dates we schedule 2 cupcakes and 2 bcs schools, one of which is ISU. If we go to 9 conference games doesn't it make more sense to drop the 2nd bcs game (putty, asu, az, etc) and keep isu?

I don't see how this game is such a boom for the economy of Iowa. People are going to go to games no matter what. If anything, dropping ISU would be more beneficial to the economy because both could be playing at home and filling the stands instead of just one stadium being filled when they play each other. I say schedule ISU sparingly and use the date to fill with other quality BCS opponents.

I get that thinking, but the issue here lies with the years where Iowa would play four Big Ten home games and five Big Ten road games. All three of your non conference games must be home games then.

If Iowa and ISU can work out the logistics to where each hosts the Cyhawk in years where they have just four conference games, that can be accomplished.

I had the old contract...thanks for posting the new one. Home finances are still shared through the 2012 game...2013-2017, that is no longer the case

I don't see any guaranteed payment for the visiting team...without all the financial numbers for a home game, I can't determine if that factor mitigates the financial good or bad from keeping or dropping this game. Reasonable financial arguments could likely be made to support both sides.

My guess is that if the schools can get their nine-game schedules to line up to where each can have this series be a home game in years where they have just four conference home games, it continues

Well wouldnt it help isu if they didnt play us? Maybe they could get one more win and get to more bowl games. Wouldnt that make more money if they got to a bowl game every other year?
