Miller: Rutgers with Strong Hand; Make Way for Nebraska & Mizzou?

Rutgers alone is a Yaaaaawwwwwn.

If the Big10 extends to 14 with Mizzou and Neb, then I say Yeeeaaaah.

If you want something on the expansion front, sure. I don't really care if they don't expand. I am not looking for a boom. I am just looking for something that helps keep Iowa financially sound, and doesn't come in and jack up tradition too much, unless its a good trade off.

Notre Dame is still my #1 choice.

And mine. It makes the most sense for everybody.

But, Rutgers and Mizzou would be great.

Forget about Nebraska--all they have is a great football tradition, and I don't think that's enough. If this is about tradition, you beg and plead with Notre Dame before you make an offer to Nebraska. Notre Dame brings tradition AND MONEY! Nebraska brings tradition--that's it.

Agree with Notre Dame...they are the most logical choice. Missouri and Nebraska would also be a good "fit" into the Big 10.

Rutgers? IMO, they bring very little and are not a "Big 10" - type of team.

I just don't think Rutgers does much without 2 other teams. Then the "splash would come from quantity at least instead of quality. Rutgers alone gives very little excitement

Athletically you're right about Rutgers but financially they bring the New York City television market which in turn means more $$$ for The University of Iowa.

Yes Penn St controls some of the NYC market but with both PSU and RU the Big Ten would have a strangle hold on that market when it comes to other conferences looking to tap into it.

you have to look at this financially, FIRST.

Because that is what the Big Ten is doing. And If Texas and Notre Dame are not options, Rutgers is the third best option out there given the market and financial upside.

I think the big "splash" everyone is expecting out of Big 10 expansion would sound more like a "thud" nationally if it is indeed Rutgers or a combination of Rutgers, Mizzou (bleh), and Nebraska.

Notre Dame or no one.

Go Hawks!

If Rutgers changed its name to the University of New Jersey, it would seem like a better fit for the Big Ten. Can we make that a rider in their contract? :)

Rutgers is a good fit--they are just relatively unknown to us in Iowa.

then the expectations people have came from the wrong premise. This is going to be about expanding for the sake of financial stability and empire. you expand to make more money in a championship game and have your conference be more relevant the last week of the season in football.

And being more relevant doesn't mean adding a top tier football school...it just means playing a championship game and being in the discussion. The Big Ten is already moving games to the Thanksgiving weekend this year..so they have eliminated one of the 'rust weeks'. A title game would eliminate the 'not in the discussion' week.

This is about that, and money. It's not about making the conference stronger on the football field. The product already sells, more people watch it than any other league.

Out of curiousity, what is the financial difference in terms of total revenue to the Big Ten from having two teams in the BCS compared to the revenue earned (realistically) from a conference championship game?

Go Hawks!

I would rather keep it the way it is. The thought of splitting the league into two divisions just seems wrong to me.

Estimates that a conference title game could be $15 mil imapct. Two teams in BCS equals about 21 million right now. 17 mil for first team and four for second.

So with title game and one BCS, you are looking at 32 mil for conference, vs no title game and two BCS of 21 mil

Jon,

If the B10 goes to 14 schools I think it makes more sense to go after 2 east coast schools and 1 midwest.

Adding both Rutgers and Pitt would make the B10 the premier football force on the eastern seabaord in terms of Media and recruiting. Pitt has a solid football program and a very very good basketball program. It wouldn't bring additional markets but it would give us a bigger share which is what it's all about.

At that point it would make perfect sense for us to add another midwest school the likely choices being Mizzou or Nebby.

Wouldnt that make more sense and $$$ than adding Rutgers and two midwest schools?

Pitt is more midwest than east coast. Pitt doesn't open up any tv markets.

Perhaps North East would have been a better description than eastern seaboard.

It's more about market share than it is TV markets. If you add Rutgers, Pitt, and Mizzou then you accomplish both. You add major markets in NJ, NYC, St Louis, KC, Pitt (roughly 2.4 million people in the metro) while also adding share throughout PA.

Having Penn State, Pitt, and Rugers gives you 3 of largest schools in the most populous region in the US. It makes the B10 the preiminant sports conference in the NE.

Nebraska is the least attractive of any expansion team. We're better off to go after more tv sets in Pennsylvania by adding Pitt as a third team along with Rutgers. Then there's a Pitt, Rutgers Penn State thing that might generate interest. Add Missouri to go with that and pick up St. Louis and KC.

Don't kid yourselves, though. That study ordered by the Big10 was done for the sole purpose of showing Notre Dame that the Big10 could expand without them. This study was done to back ND against a wall and say once and for all its now or never.

It will be Notre Dame to get to 12 teams or Notre Dame, Rutgers and Missouri. Missouri better thank their lucky stars if that happens.
