The New Rose Bowl Clause is something to get familiar with...or at least, we hope it is from Iowa's perspective because that means a great 2010 if we have to consider the ramifications of the new rule...I have run down some of those ramifications, who to root for this year and against, if Iowa wants to make it to the Rose Bowl, at worst...and also, what would three Rose Bowls have looked like this decade if this rule were in place then? I bet the Rose Bowl Committee absolutely hates this scenario. They are as tradition-bound as can be, and the thought of Boise State playing in their Rose Bowl over a Big Ten team must make them nauseous. I would like to know the reason for this rule change - my guess is that it has something to do with trying to keep anti-trust litigation off their plates.

Curious why only the RoseBowl has this clause, why doesn't this clause rotate every year between the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, Orange? If they get Boise or TCU for numerous years, I agree they would not be happy.

I am confused. I thought the conference bowl tie in's have the 1st or 2nd selection if they lose their conference champion to the BCS game. I realize one non BCS school gets a BCS bid if they finish in the top 12 but I did not think the had to be selected with the first or 2nd pick.

Even under these guidelines Iowa could still go to the Rose Bowl and play Boise State or TCU.

Say Iowa goes 11-1 and loses to Ohio State. Oregon wins the Pac 10 with a 10-2 overall record and gets the Pac 10's automatic qualifier.

The Rose Bowl could still possibly take Iowa and Boise State/TCU.

Oregon would have to play in another BCS game.

I think that is a possible scenario.

Jon, just think of the bowl packages if Iowa makes the Rose!!

It would be off the charts. At least 50-60,000 Hawkeye fans would make the trip. I have talked to numerous Hawkeye fans over the years that said they have never been to a bowl game but would go to the Rose Bowl.

Jon Miller would be rolling in cash with the bowl charter.

This wouldn't work, just like the Big Ten if the PAC 10 automatic qualifer isn't in the NC game then they go to the Rose Bowl as the Rose Bowl can't pass on the conference champion. So it would be Oregon against Boise/TCU just like Jon explained.

I think the other bowls forced this on the Rose because the other bowls have been getting stuck with the little schools from time to time. But because Rose has two tie-ins they either got their two champs or the first replacement pick if the champ was in the NC. The Rose never got the "last pick" of BCS-eligible teams. I can't believe Rose gave in on this though - they should have said STICK IT, we're the frickin Rose Bowl, if you don't like it find two conferences you'd like to align your bowl with.

All that said, qualifying for the Rose is still pretty much like it always has been. Just as it was 20 years ago, when we last went to the Rose Bowl… if you want to go to Pasadena win the B10 Title and the tiebreaker. No BCS rule has screwed us out of a Rose Bowl berth we earned - if 2002 season had happened with 1990 rules OSU would have gone to Rose. We just weren't lucky like 06 Mich or 07 Illinois - neither of which really deserved the Rose.

But even without this new clause its very hard for a B10 co-champ (that didn't win tiebreaker) to get to the Rose, because odds are if you tied for the championship then the other co-champ isn't in the NC game. 2002 was the strange exception due to lack of rule to keep OB from taking us from Rose. 2002 Hawkeyes really are the only non-automatic qualifying B10 that really did deserve to be in the Rose... alas. Its bizarre that its easier to get to Rose as 6-2 runner up to 8-0 NC qualifier than as a 7-1 co-champ.

If a P10 team plays a B10 team for the NC, which conf gets the boot in favor of Boise? I suppose the Rose would get to pick whoever they wanted to play Boise, and all things being equal I bet they'd pick a B10 team (unless the P10 runner up is ranked WAY ahead of the B10 runner up)
