Miller: More Staff Turnover? Is Recruiting Florida Worth It?

I like this setup
Stoops DC and LB's coach
Wilson for D-L coach
LaVarr Woods ST 's coach and recruits Florida
Wilson in my opinion is more of a players coach than coach K is
we have Ruduck whomost expect to be a 3 year starter that coach K got

I guess we are both content as I'm not looking for a new gig, and if I were you couldn't afford me.

That said it was just an honest question. If you are going to speculate on why K might be looking elsewhere why not speculate on what that might mean in regards to the biggest Iowa football decision in 13 years? I guess I just don't see a whole lot of public interest in our lack of success recruiting Florida, at least when it's compared to the interest in who our next DC will be.

Jon was talking about your signature line, doofus.

If you go back to the recruiting signings over the years, you can see similar results. I would say Florida has more players that quit. But if you look at our signings over the last 10 years for IL and OH, especially OH, you will see results that will surprise you.

OH: Signed 23 players over the last 9 years. Success: Fletcher, Stross, Stanzi, DJK, Hyde. TBD: Lowery, Hitchens, Donnal, Rogers...and a bunch of non contributors/transferred. We get the left overs in OH, just like Fl. OSU gets there choice, then Michigan and PSU. Players want to stay close to home most of the time.

IL: Signed 24 players over the last 9 years. 10 players were starters, 2 were part time starters, 1-2 TBD, and 10-12 were non starters/transferred.

IL, especially Chicago is a short drive from Iowa City. You will get more marginal players to stay, compared to Florida. Florida is a long way from Iowa City. If you question your chances of playing, you are more likely to transfer/quit, compared to IL players. Your top players/starters are going to stay most of the time. Now, if you get top rated players, who don't see a starting position right away (remember Ryan Bain from Chicago), they may also transfer. But we aren't usually getting the top rated players from Florida

Getting quality starters from FL is more the issue. Many of the developmental players we get probably don't see the "light at the end of the tunnel" of working your butt off to get better and play by their 3-4th year, so they transfer after 1-2 years.

"As I wrote in my Hawk Stock piece on Iowa recruiting during the Ferentz era, the Hawkeyes have had a significant level of attrition at the defensive line position since after the 2007 season. That may be nothing more than coincidence and a series of bad breaks, but it does stand out a bit when you have one position see a great deal of attrition that doesn’t hit other positions on the team equally."

Where there's smoke, there's fire...

ummmmm no.

Re: Staff ......must be able to step on the shoes AND still leave a shine. Some people never learn it and some are just incapable of it. Valued skill to have when leading others.

Re: FL recruits ........pick good ones and they're likely to be on the field contributing and satisfied.....pick marginal ones and they're likely spending most time, if not all, on the bench not contributing and not satisfied. So the question for the latter group becomes "why did I move halfway across the country to do this?"

Aiken actually was the one who recruited Brad Banks, who was at a Juco in Mississippi when Aiken spotted him.

I agree that we do better with Illinois,St Louis,Ohio and Indiana recruits,it seems to me. Now, that can change this year if Maybin and Venkus end up being good 4 year players. I think you still work Florida, and use whatever ties you have to grab kids like Ruddock.
In basketball recruiting the same principle applies....go to Chicago and get kids who are close to home..they stay at a higher rate.

Jon, quick question. I thought Vernon Jackson was, like Ettore Ewen, an injury issue? If not, where did he end up and how did he do?

To be fair, most of the Florida guys who haven't worked didn't exactly have huge success somewhere else.
