Miller: More Staff Turnover? Is Recruiting Florida Worth It?

Why write a 2 page story on a position coach few know or care about while basically ignoring the real lead which is what him looking elsewhere says about who we are looking at for DC?

There has been some grumbling about whether Kaczenski's in-your-face style of coaching sticks out like a sore thumb in the program and could -- could -- be partly responsible for a higher rate of attrition at that position. Looks like Kacz's style might be a better fit with Bo the Screamer.

If we KNEW for sure he was looking elsewhere, then that would have been the focus of the article. But since we don't, it wasn't.

As an aside, I am still not in the market for an HN Ombudsman. When I am, I'll let you know.

OmbudsPERSON, you sexist!

Troy Johnson was also from Florida and we know how well that turned out....

Not sure if Kaz recruited him or not though.

If True. If he wasn't advised by the Boss to look around he better hope he lands the job or continue to search.

Who knows if it's a "Florida thing", but I think you can also make a science out of coincidence. I could ask several questions (that I don't particularly know the answers to):

Are these players leaving because that's what people from FL are like?

Is it because these particular individuals have character issues?

Did they leave because they are buried on the depth charts and wanted more playing time elsewhere?

Did they leave because they did like this particular coach's "in your face" style?

Maybe it's a combination of the things above. I guess you need to keep recruiting where you've had success getting your best players, but none of the things above necessarily make me think we should give up on recruiting from FL.

Also, are we having this type of attrition from any other states? Will the problem improve if we recruit from Georgia instead of Florida?

I can't say a lot about the types of players that we've recruited from Florida, but if we are recruiting players from Florida just for the sake of "recruiting Florida", then maybe we are getting a lot of duds. They still need to be good football players that are also the types of individuals that are going to hang in there, work hard, and earn their playing time.

Is it a problem with evaluating these recruits?

I can't answer those questions confidently. However, we are looking a long period of time and seeing similar results, so I think it stands out. I don't think it's a blank statement against Florida preps on the whole...everyone recruits Florida, so the competition is fierce. However, Iowa's 'success rate' in Florida has been poor by any objective standard you could conceive, over the last six five or six years, based on on field performance at the college level.

Big Ten teams typically get the Florida left overs (except for OSU/UM). Most of the star Florida kids stay in state or play in the SEC.

The big question is, does this hurt us? Well that leads to another question, who is the DC and who becomes Dline coach? Can Aiken come in and do both? That would be sweet.

Does losing Coach K hurt recruiting? Doesn't seem like it, though Ruddock and Campbell have promise.
Do any Dline players leave or decommit? I have no idea how important he was to their recruiting.

We will have to see

So should the bigger question be, "why hasn't Coach Ferentz addressed his recruiting or lack there of"? Maybe he finally has.

Bret Bielema did a pretty good job in Florida for Iowa. He recruited Fred Barr, Colin Cole, Mo Brown, Abdul Hodge, Brad Banks and a few others. Iowa's recruiting in Florida has taken a hit since Bielema left

That's always been true. But we used to have more success with the guys we got from Florida than we are having now. Fred Barr, Brad Banks, C.J. Jones, Abdul Hodge, etc. We aren't getting guys like that anymore, and that stopped right around the time Aiken left for the NFL.

I guess we are both content as I'm not looking for a new gig, and if I were you couldn't afford me.

That said it was just an honest question. If you are going to speculate on why K might be looking elsewhere why not speculate on what that might mean in regards to the biggest Iowa football decision in 13 years? I guess I just don't see a whole lot of public interest in our lack of success recruiting Florida, at least when it's compared to the interest in who our next DC will be.

Ferentz promotes Parker to DC. He brings Aiken back to coach the defensive line, but as a recognition of Aiken's experience and knowledge, he also gives him an associate head coach title (which is why Aiken is willing to come back as line coach).

Kaz's departure makes this possible. And LeVar Woods promoted to take the final spot.

Who knows...I'd take that scenario though.
