Miller: Iowa Hoops Stats & Unforgettable Gatens

I like Gatens. I just hate all this reactionary hyperbole.

Nobody is saying he's one of the greatest players to ever play here. They're saying he's one of the greatest Hawkeyes in program history. There's a difference, and it's true.

In your opinion, its true. There have been hundreds of great hawkeyes over the years, and Gatens is a great hawkeye but playing on several bad teams doesn't make him a top five hawkeye of all time like some people are claiming. These are the same people who said the same thing about Cole last season.

Not true...or you wouldn't hate the "reactionary hyperbole" so much...

Very true. I've defended Gatens in many threads that were bashing him. I've kept the same, rational opinion of him, while the majority of posters have went back and forth with extreme over reactions.

I think stokes is actually filling in some minutes that May has left on the table more than Archie.
Last night May really looked tight and stiff. I really wonder just how bad his back is. I watched him several times in HS and he was much, much more fluid than he has been of late.

I don't understand this one of the greatest Hawkeyes stuff? What does it mean? In my opinion I'm one of the greatest Hawkeyes ever, among others, I just really sucked at basketball. But if we're going to separate the two, I want to be considered one of the best Hawkeyes ever.

Which players in the top ten in scoring all time do you not consider all time greats?
Andre? Settles? Nelson? Marble? Is Matt the only one on that list that does not make your list of alltime greats?

I would guess that if you considered % of total points scored, that Matt's % would be very high on that list, due to playing two years on a slo-ball team,non-scoring team. As Jon points out, he might be near 2000 pts playing for Fran for 4 years.

Or Fran could have put much more talent around him and Gatens would be around 1000 or less for his career.

And yes, I do think Gatens is not that same caliber of player as the other nine guys in the top 10.

That would be doubtful at best that Gatens doesn't score 1,000+ pts in his career. This is the type of comment that has just frustrated me in the analysis of Gatens...look at his career all sacrifices he has made and the struggles he went through in shooting.
Put him at one position with Fran and being in the shape his is even with better players around him, he may have less points, but well over 1,000.

The comments where people compare him to JJ Redick based on two and a half games are what frustrate me.

Explain how it was made based off two and a half games when I made the statement in a thread in August.
Basabe/White are the low post threats that were going to be needed to be able to have this type of success...it is finally happenening. Do I expect Gatens to set his career high next game...no, do I think he will have close to 20, yes.

Gatens has been unfairly judged and criticized in his career, your statements are no different...he has always been a better player than he has been able to show. With some legitimate talent around him, he is playing even better and closer to the level he would have been had the situation at Iowa been different his first two seasons on campus.
