Miller: Hawks Take Two Steps Back

I'm sick of all this crap about their great D. Their two best defenders were out for the game. When the Hawks went no huddle they moved the ball. Then, mysteriously, they stopped.

I would not say their two best defenders were out. They were good ones no doubt, but they have a couple of D lineman that are studs and their linebackers were all over the place. Not sure about their D backs as we didn't test them at all. This is more about what we didn't do on both sides of the ball.

You would think that with such a talented receiving group that they wouldn't be dropping so many balls what was it 4-5 drops

Their highest rated defenders are Still and Hill the two d-tackles...as gamefilm pointed out in his pregame analysis. Mauti was very replacable,as gamefilm pointed out, because they are deep in lbs.

PSU has a tough defense, and they have a smart d-coordinator. He clearly knew that Iowa had to throw the ball today and they sent a lot of people, and played press coverage. Vandy is ok on his feet, but no D-Rob,so they knew he would not hurt them scrambling. We are pretty limited offensively, and they had strengths to counter our strengths.

I expected to lose this game, have been since last spring. PSU had a lot of people back, and Iowa did not,and it was at PSU...simple. Now, I expect Iowa and KF to regroup and win the next 6 games, and win the Legends. We probably lose to Wisky in the Title game, but it will be a decent season anyway.

I think some fans got carried away with this PSU streak, thinking that PSU would roll over for iowa...no. And the ULM game was at home,vs a mid-major..this is the Big Ten on the road. I have to ask, honestly, what did fans expect this year...12-0? We have lost two road games. I expect to win the next two road games at Minny and PU,and all our home games...we are Iowa, not LSU. We dont lose more starters than any team in the league and come out and go undefeated...get real folks.

Urban Meyer made reference during the game how Iowa typically is known for the strong offensive and defensive lines that it develops and that this years lines didn't seem to fit that mold ; at least not yet . Maybe we aren't as good as some people were led to believe. Top 20 ; we are definitely not at this state of the game .

Hawks will NOT make a bowl game if the coaching staff keeps running this crap offense they have run for years...Iowa does not have horses on D to keep them in games unless they opening it up more.

As a fan who has posted 'stupid' comments after a loss because I was ****** off, I should realize every game has the potential to be one of those games and that was yesterday against Penn State, although Iowa State was another one. I hope going forward that they got whatever went wrong out of their system and can play the next 7 games like they are capable of, which I know at this moment is hard to figure out.:)

I was sitting about 15 rows directly behind the Hawks bench. Darrell Wilson was chewing out the LBs on at least three occasions. They got an earful for about 5 to 6 minutes each time. They dropped their heads, looked like beaten little puppies.

Iowa's DL and LBs appear to have issues with strength and endurance. Their arms and shoulders are not strong enough to handle OL blocks and bring down 210 to 220 lb running backs who get a head of steam. They tumble over, clutching and flailing, or their chins get stuck into the ground as they get pinned down by big linemen.

I think the defensive unit for Penn State has about double the athletic ability that Iowa's defenders have.

Jon I agree and would like to add that if Russell Wilson was PSU's quaterback they would have scored 40 points yesterday, Speilman and Urban were excellent yesterday in their assessments, Vandy really struggled and PSU got the majority of the breaks but the Hawks still had an opportunity to win in the 4th qtr. on the road but couldnt make any plays, 7-5 would be a great season, win the home games and steal one on the road
