Miller: Hawkeyes Survive Northwestern

When we were leading, which was most of the game, oddly, it sure didn't feel like we were winning.

That's certainly the way it felt to me.

The offense has you shaking your head at times, while the BBDB defense leaves you wanting to kick puppies.

What are yout thoghts on some of the Frosh? Alston played well, and Nico Law looks like a star in the making I would like to see him get more playing time.

You hit that right on the head. I didn't feel comfortable with this game until the last two minutes. If Persa had been 100% it could have been another loss.

If Persa had been 100% healthy ... Northwestern very likely would be undefeated at this point. And that's even with their pass-D being so sub-par. Northwestern really should have beaten the Illini .... they were totally in the game against Michigan .... and they gave us everything we could handle. If Persa had his old mobility back ... everybody would have been screwed ... not just the Hawks.

While Fitzy pisses me off ... he was very correct to support a heisman push for Persa ... a healthy Persa really is THAT good!

If Gettis OR A Rob hadn't gotten hurt vs MSU, Iowa probably would have gone 10-2 last year.

IF this IF that. I've had a bunch of friends saying Iowa was lucky. Funny they didn't say that the last 3 years when NW was LUCKY. In any event the D made 2 HUGE plays inside the redzone and harrassed Persa in the 1st half to keep him off balance. The Offense made plays and 1st downs when they needed to resulting in a W. What the heck more can anyone ask for with this team?

Or if Tarpanien(sp?) and Nielsen has stayed healthy or...

Lot's of if's or but's. That doesn't diminish Homer's point Persa is very good. Not sure that Baylor's Robert Griffin III isn't even better in any case.

Anyway, that was a good win, against a strong offensive team that always seems to play well against us for a variety of reasons. Even if they don't put up a large amount of points against us.

Nice to see the entire offense come around. Northwestern's defense is shaky but, there was some concern our offense would lose some early season confidence with the PSU defeat.

A couple of things in particular struck me about the game.

We gave up 31 points but the defense played well. Persa made some great throws/plays and it's awfully hard to blame the defense for that. You just accept that. Miller, really stood out, and I liked the play of Bigach. A couple of guys who'll be around next year. Mike Daniels might have had is best game of the year. Really disruptive.

The offensive line played well. Impressed with Reiff in particular but, J. Ferentz played well and Gettis.

Brad Rogers started to get his feet under him after that big blown block last week in his return to action. If he can stay healthy and improve him timing/conditioning that really helps the run game.

This was a big win for the morale of the team and dramatrically lessens my concerns that we might not be bowl eligible. Now at least 7 wins seems likely with 8 still very realistic.

Oh, SNAP! The what-if game really is an exercise in futility. But posters let themselves get sucked into it every day.

If Stanzi had remained healthy in '09 ... Iowa could well have gone undefeated.

Had Tarpinian, Nielsen, MacMillan, and ARob remained healthy ... Iowa probably would have gone 11-1 last year ... maybe better.

The point wasn't to suggest that Iowa "just got lucky" but rather to point out what an absolutely HUGE impact player Persa is/was.

I wasn't, at all, saying that Iowa was lucky. The fact remained that Iowa's D still manged to get pressure on the NW QB. It also is true that when Iowa's O was actually executing (read that as NOT shooting themselves in the foot), Northwestern's D really couldn't do much to shut down our O.

Besides, while Persa wasn't 100% ... it's also true that quite a number of Iowa's top players were dinged too.

I have no issue with the title.

Iowa just seemed bi-polar at times offensively. Running when they should be passing and passing when they should be running. It took them long enough to figure out they could run on Northwestern which surprised me.

Wait... what??

I believe the fact that we weren't predictable was the reason our running game was so successful... and our entire offense for that matter.

I loved the offensive play calling of the game. It was not predictable. We ran the PA and took shots at the endzone... and what happened? We scored. We opened up with 4 passes and I believe we completed 3, if not all 4 of them.

I loved our aggressiveness. I thought we came out like a team playing to win and stayed that way for the most part(aside from a few moments).

I truly hope this type of play calling continues throughout the season. It worked, don't change it. The offense did it's job this game.
