Miller: Ferentz for Life

Great write-up. You bring up an interesting point about after the 2020 season Iowa having two coaches in 42 years and PSU & FSU being the only possible programs able to make a similar claim. This new extension was great news as it's obvious that Kirk Ferentz has the program at it's strongest level ever and there is every indication that it will only continue to
gain momentum. It's a great time to be a Hawk and we owe it all to Kirk Ferentz.

Jon - great piece.

When KF retires at Iowa this will be the legacy of Iowa football.

• Two coaches in no less than 42 years.
• Successive record setting victory attaining coaches
• A commitment to making the Iowa football coach the highest paid or just about in the conference.
• A commitment to facilities.
• A commitment to assistants that is almost unprecedented.

My point is, that Ferentz legacy is going to be untouchable. He won't have his own coaching tree like Fry but his impact on Iowa will be greater. He will leave Iowa in a better position than it has ever been.

He is a coach who has never made the same mistake twice in his career. This means we are unlikely to see a repeat of 2006, or the off the field transgressions.

For that reason, and that reason alone, I truly believe that Iowa's next football coach is currently coaching on the team, my hunch is that it is Coach K (likely successor to Norm Parker.)

Why would anyone leave Iowa. You get a handsome payday and if you win 9 games a year and your kids keep their noses clean, you're doing just fine.

Iowa is a special place to its alums and they realize that this is not a place that people leave. They settle down in Iowa, and it gets in your blood.

I'm not from Iowa, and I don't live there now. I was in Iowa City for 4.5 years. And there isn't a place that will make the hair on my neck stand up more than Kinnick Stadium on a fall Saturday.

Ferentz isn't going anywhere anytime soon, but I do believe that this contract will be his last.

There is not a better ambassador to the world for my alma mater.

This is such a good post I added it to the end of the article.

This is such a good post I added it to the end of the article.

Thanks Jon!

I should add (making it even more impressive) that the 4.5 years I was in Iowa City were from the fall of 1997 to March of 2002. Not exactly the glory years of Iowa football.

jon
great piece! its great to be a Hawkeye and a Iowan! One of the best day in Hawkeye football was the day Bob stoops was hired as Oklahoma head coach and we found Kirk Ferentz and the Ferentz family!!

Good point. A lot of people were upset with Bowlsby when OU hired Stoops but things couldn't have worked out any better.

Jon, wow. Seriously, wow. What a terrific article.

I'm about 5 years younger than you, so share many of the some same Hayden memories and thoughts. But, as my handle shows, I cannot imagine Iowa without Coach Ferentz. Which shows how lucky we truly are...before Ferentz I couldn't ever imagine Iowa without Hayden. Fortunately, lighting struck twice for the University of Iowa football program. Not many other programs have had two back-to-back living legends guide them.

Thanks again, Jon. An incredible piece and a must read for every young and old Hawkeye fan.

Two quotes I remember vividly from the last 11 years of Iowa football...

The first was from Ann Rhodes in reference to a reporter asking about Stoops during the introduction of Ferentz. I was shocked when she actually said that he gave what everyone in the room felt was an incredibly lackluster interview. That candidness either said it really was a horrible interview, or or they were covering their *****, but it was a ballsy thing to say.

The second was when we were going through our annual KF to the NFL talk and they interviewed his Dad.

The quote went something along the lines of "what you people don't understand is that Kirk and Mary love Iowa the way I love Pennsylvania.

Iowa and Kirk are a great fit. Work hard. Do the job. Nothing phony. As BSpringsting said "no better ambassador.."

That is just one of the best pieces of writing you've wrote Jon. Sometimes we just take winning for granted. We get caught up in the W's and L's. And don't exactly take the time to look at the stats and what he has done for the program and where it would be without him and Fry. Truly amazing!

It is absolutely glorious that The Ferentz will be here for the rest of his career. The only thing I want to know is, why are we so blessed?

Bravo to both the Jon & "the boss" for putting so eloquently what 99% of us fans feel about Hayden, Kirk & Staff.

Thanks!

The only thing I miss (& this has nothing to do with coaching) is the post game media conferences with Hayden. Boy did that man have some one line zingers & funny stories.

Kirk has had a few funny quotes; more so recently as he has grown more comfortable in front of media than in his early years.

Late last week, Ferentz signed a contract extension that will have him as Iowa’s head coach through the 2010 season.

Super. When will he and Barta start wrapping up a deal for next year? ;)

Seriously, great column, Jon. Having suffered through the down years, the resurrection under the sly fox, the slide towards the end and then Kirk's breath of fresh air, I have been impressed with his tenure. I, too, think he is a great fit at Iowa and I'm happy he'll be here a long time.

Echoing Bspringsteen-a long narrative-(good call adding his post to article jon)

I too grew up idolizing Hayden Fry, and to this day it feels like blasphemy to even hint that perhaps Kirk Ferentz has improved on the great thing that Hayden had going, but he has, and I truly believe that the program will continue to move forward over the next ten years. However, as great as the winning and the improved prestige is, the most important thing about the continuation of the Ferentz era is that we are (continuing) winning "the right way!" We are obviously blessed as a fan contingency for a head coach that has continued to win and raise our national profile (multiple top ten finishes/BCS bowls/Orange Bowl win etc.) but as importantly and equally forgettable nationally is that we do it the right way! We are not Florida/Texas/Alabama/Ohio St./USC etc....and I for one am very thankful for that. This is not to say that every one of those programs do not compete "the right way", but I think it is safe to that "every one" of those programs does not!
I decided to come to the University of Iowa because I grew up a lifelong fanatic and disciple of Hawkeye Football (Hayden Fry) and Hawkeye Basketball (Tom Davis). Two gentlemen who are the definition of success and class. Unfortunately I only was given one year to experience first hand their leadership while I was apart of the student body. But I am thankful to have had at least one year. I am not ashamed to admit that I cried during Hayden's announced retirement (as well as Mr. Davis's lack of contract extension!) My tears/regret was not solely what I was losing as a fan of winning programs, but more importantly the quality of leaderships that was representing my teams. At Iowa, in my opinion, it is about more than competing at the highest levels athletically... it is about competing at the highest levels both competitively and ethically. It is not merely coaching football for the hopes of championships, but also the process of molding and developing young individuals and giving them the life lessons that will allow them future success (whether professionally or personally). It is about reflecting the values of your community, and state, that can be appreciated on a wider plane than simply "college football".
This is what coach Ferentz has done...as did Hayden and Mr. Davis before him. As DJK referred to during media days-Kirk Ferentz has taught him "the IOWA WAY."
As great as the high points have been this past 10+ years (and they have been fantastic!) some of my fondest memories of the Ferentz era were those building blocks of the '99/2000 seasons. It is the hours I used to spend defending the football program on message boards like this, and talking about the improvements that were being made-even when the large majority couldn't see it. To echo "the Boss's" reference, some people would wish for unending success during their college years. I on the other hand, couldn't be prouder that I witnessed firsthand the transition from one legend to another (1998-2002), and the re-building of the program. I was sad to see Hayden go, but was confident from Kirk's opening press conference that we got the right guy. From his opening introduction to his most recent post game interview...Kirk represents our program/fans/state in a way that we can all be proud. It is only too bad back in 1999 that we only got one out of two right, or I would still be as passionate about basketball! Here's hoping that Coach Fran is a return on that front as well. Anyway, I apologize for the length, I did not intend to go that long, if you made it to the end of this statement congratulations and thanks for sticking in there:)

3344....you beat me to it. Good point regarding Mr. Davis.

If only Iowa had shown the same "intelligence" with Mr. Davis and not the usual "raise the bar, the grass is greener, win now" mentality he was ultimately screwed by, the BB program wouldn't be in near the dire straits it is now.

Absolutely SDK...to this day it makes me sad the way he was discarded not only by the admin, but by a large % of fans that got greedy...unfortunately I think it is safe to say the BB program got what it deserved when it "upgraded" to Steve Alford :( End point to all of this from my perspective...I have never "expected" national titles (would be great to get one!) but only expected our teams to have the CHANCE to compete/beat any program on any given day, and I think that under the leadership of the Big 3 (recent history by my definition-HF/TD/KF) we have been able and continue to be able to say that!

Mr. Davis always had a much better golf game than KF. KF does not play golf. He is dedicated to his family and Iowa football. Sorry, but I simply cannot put Mr. Davis on the Hayden/KF level as far as results. I know you are talking about the character of the program, but you still have to win enough to maintain support of the fans. Mr. Davis did not, and attendance was fading. Fan complained about Lute also, but he was clearly the real deal and fans wanted Lute to stay. Not Tom. Nice guy,but not a very energetic recruiter. BB is different from football, where development reigns. In bb you need to recruit the talent, not create it,like in football.

But, KF is also the real deal. The total package. And that really does make this extension that looks to keep him at Iowa another 11 years fantastic news.
I shudder to think about the odds of getting lucky a third straight football hire...we see how dicey it is with bb hires.

I suffered thru the 19 non-winning football seasons. I gloried in the 1970 Ralph Miller team. I attended Iowa during the Ronnie Lester years. But we still went to the football games, anyway. I attended the Hayden Fry into press conference..just walked into the fieldhouse to check him out. I liked him instantly, because he threw the ball at SMU and he had texas recruiting connections.
Hayden was a genius at picking assistants, and KF was one of those guys.

Even at his advanced age, Hayden was cracking wise in the tv booth yesterday..ending he interview by thanking the play by play guy for giving Anthony Herron a job...like poor anthony needed help...funny.
