Miller - Deace Podcast

Did Deace actually say that he felt Devon Gardner would be his #1 Franchise pick if he were picking an NFL roster? from B10 teams? I know he said he would have to improve his decision making and the like, but he's not even in the discussion. How you don't go with either Cook, Hackenburg, or Miller as all those guys have NFL type bodies or skills. Connor Cook was unbelievable at the end of last year in huge games. Miller is Miller and has improved an incredible amount throwing the ball, and Hackenburg is a freak with an absolute cannon who stepped into a tough spot and has played very very well. Devon Gardner has been a turnover machine and has been terribly inconsistent...and Michigan has sucked.

I was just thinking, you know, I need to give the Deacer some credit for his CFB acumen...then he says something like that and I think, "what are you watching that I'm not".

Dace is a Michigan homer. He has intellectual honesty in all things except when it comes to Michigan football

Your comments on Miller having prototypical size and improving his throwing a great deal strike me as odd. I do agree on Cook and Hackenberg but Miller is listed by OSU at 6'2" and I am not even buying that. He is probably closer to 6'. Gardner is listed at 6' 4" so he is more on target for size but I agree that his play is erratic.

Miller is a super athlete that really is a RB or WR that is playing QB which we see often in college. If you watch OSU and Urban Meyer football you will quickly realize there is not a whole lot of Pro Style about it especially the passing game. Miller's numbers have improved but the offense is a lot of run around and chuck it deep to guys like Philly Brown. I will be mildly surprised if he is a NFL drafted QB and even more shocked if he gets more than a cup of coffee as a QB in the NFL. He is Troy Smith 2.0. Great college player but nothing QB prototypical about him for the pros.

Hmmmm...Braxton Miller will play QB in the pros...and I think he has a chance to be very good. Two words for you...Russell Wilson...you know the 6'5" 240 pound Russell Wilson who just won the Super Bowl. Yeah that guy...Miller is of this mold and if the Iowa game showed you anything last year...he's freaking accurate now. Wilson showed NFL guys that his size was no issue...he just kept making plays. Manziel, I believe, will have similar success if the Browns can give him some protection. These guys are a nightmare for defenses. Miller goes in round two if you ask me.

Geez, Learn the damn game.

The Learn the damn game thing is just a joke...your point is valid about Miller, but I think he's improved greatly each year...and I suspect this year will be no different.

There are no absolutes in the NFL or college but there are trends and patterns. There are always a few exceptions to the rule.

In terms of Russell Wilson as a comparison to Braxton Miller I am not certain. Yes in terms of size. Wilson finished his career at Wisky in a pro-style system. He used his feet to extend plays but rarely looked to run. He was very accurate and threw all types of routes. I do not see the same thing from Miller. I would agree that Miller is closer to Manziel in terms of his playing style. I am sold on Braxton as a big time college player but not his pro potential as a QB. He killed us last year with his feet not his arm by extending plays and running around the end.

Will be fun to see how this pans out.

Agreed, I'm glad we don't have to face him for the next two years.

Agree on Hackenberg. What will be interesting to me is the marriage between James Franklin's system and Hackenberg. Bill O'Brien ran a true Pro-Style system and program in every way which fit Hackenberg perfectly. O'Brien was also a tremendous tutor for him.

Franklin's system is much different. When he was hired I thought that could be a great hire for PSU but it seems square peg round hole for Hackenberg. It will be interesting to watch this new marriage as I think Hackenberg lost the most with this coaching change.

Nailed it. The day of the hire, a segment of the BTN talking honcho discussion was whether or not Hackenberg would even stay around, NOT because of sanctions but because of O'Brien leaving and the coach replacing him.

There is a difference between Miller and Manziel vs. Wilson. Wilson is a scrambler not a runner when he runs he is very cautious and smart with taking hits etc. Miller and Manziel are not similar players to Wilson. Both are more Vick and that can work in the pros but it also isn't a good way to consistently win or stay on the field as Vick got hurt a lot and struggled against the top teams (especially in the playoffs). Wilson is athletic but he is a pocket passer that can run.

Miller makes me think of Tebow (not because of size obviously or running style). They both played in the Urban Meyer offense and have pretty good completion percentages. Yet Tebow was knocked in the pros for not being accurate. The offense and skill players versus other teams mask the weaknesses of their QBs. Miller is more of a WR.

I would put Gardner 2nd in the league behind Hackenburg. He has all the tools but needs to clean stuff up. Cook would be 3rd in my book.
