Miller & Deace: Nebraska Makes 'Disastrous, Dumpster Fire' Hire

In this installment of the Miller & Deace podcast, the duo leads off with an in depth discussion of Nebraska’s recent hiring of Mike Riley. To say Deace was less than impressed is an understatement. Here are some of his quotes on the hire:

“I thought it was a disastrous hire. Dumpster fire, hot mess. Epic fail. Disaster. In fact this might be, on the surface and sight unseen, the worst major college coaching decision I can think of in recent memory…It makes no sense. You are taking about a guy whose rushing offenses have ranked in the hundreds the last few years in college football. He didn’t build the program there, Dennis Erickson did. It was not good when he was there before.â€￾

All that in the first 60 seconds of Deace opening his mouth in this 40 minute podcast. They also talked about Iowa’s huge win against North Carolina, plus picks for the major conference title games as well as some Bret Bielema talk and why there won’t be another Kirk Ferentz at Iowa, but not for the reasons you might think. All in all, I think it's one of our best this year.

Thanks Nebraska!
Mike Reilly? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

That is rich.

Oregon State is the ISU of the Pac 12 and the guy has had some success. Short of hiring the coach from G-Tech away, the Nebraska offense of yesteryear ain't coming back.

Looking at the Husker board, there is a poll about the new hire. Now granted it is just a message board and by no means a representative sample of the fanbase. But, it is interesting.

At the moment I typed this, it was:
80% yea
20% nay
with about 250 votes recorded

I'm stunned by this. Huskers are dumb.

you'd be surprised how quickly you can talk yourself into a new coach.

This whole ordeal should remind people that it isn't enough to just fire someone (cough Ferentz), you have to know who you're going to hire to replace him as well.

I just pray that Barta is smart enough (or the people around him) to call their targets' agents first to see if there is any interest so we're not stuck with some 10th place choice as head coach while still paying a large buyout for Ferentz.

So if that AD were in another conference, he might have offered the job to Kirk Ferentz.

The upside for this guy is 8-9 wins a year, downside is that he is completely overmatched and misses bowl games. It makes no sense to me. The best years this guy had the PAC 12 was not very good.

I couldn't agree more. I'll go on record as saying I'm read for a HC change at Iowa, but I don't want Ferentz gone just for the sake of getting rid of him, with the blind hope that Iowa can go out and find someone better. If you ask me, this is exactly what Nebraska just did. That seems like a good way to end up with a football version of Todd Lickliter.

There needs to be a plan in place, with someone more or less ready and waiting to take the job, and THEN pull the trigger.

Paul Johnson or Ken Niamotolo(sp?) would have been a better hire than Mike Riley......Just go old school, run the triple option and bring on the best DC that you can possibly get.

more than likely, you are going to have to wait til 2016 at the earliest....Do you have that kind of patience?

Nebraska just fired a 9 win coach. So basically Mike Riley has to win 10+ games per year at Nebraska to keep his job. Mike Riley has won 10 in a single season once in his life.

I guess I don't get why everyone is questioning the hire. Nebraska is a National Powerhouse. They contend for championships and are everything the University of Iowa wishes they could be. If Nebraska believes firing Pelini and hiring Mike Riley is the right move, who are we little ole Hawk fans to question them.

Looking forward to the Deace meltdown when Michigan settles for someone less than one of the Harbaughs or Les Miles.

:D you guys do realize that they play in the B1G West, right? Just look at their schedule and there are 8-9 guaranteed wins right there. Heck I believe in 'ol KF could have won 9 games at Nebraska this year.

Little red fans claim they don't demand NCs and aren't delusional but I was talking to some coworkers and they said they need to win the big games like MSU, Wisky etc. So I asked if they win those it is ok if they lose a few other games to lesser teams, they of course say no. So any nebby fan who tells you anything less than they demand NCs and 1995 is coming back is full of it. They all want it, they all expect it. They are just trying to be a little humble so they don't look stupid each year.

He must be alright of a coach. USC, Alabama, UCLA and even Wisconsin two years ago wanted him. And I think Erickson had success with the players Riley recruited their in his first stint as coach. I think this is going to be a pleasant surprise of a hire for the Huskers.
