Miller & Deace: Breaking Down Iowa's Loss to ISU

Good point about Iowa's 11 losses as double digit favorites and no other team comes close. Wiscy was 48-1 in the same time period (as double digit favorites). I think the reason is Iowa's inability to establish the run and stick with it. Maybe we need to rethink our blocking schemes.

Also, I think Steve was right, our QBs do regress. Even though Stanzi had better stats in 2010, he played too conservatively in critical situations. If we're changing OCs maybe we should try to get a good QB coach maybe with NFL experience. I think our QBs aren't taught the proper amount of risk/reward.

You can change blocking schemes all you want, but it won't matter if teams can comfortably stack the box against us with no risk of getting burned. With that said there was one run that should have been a 50 yard td run if Bullock would have seen the giant hole in front of him.

I posted this before but Arkansas had 68 rushes for 428 (6.2 yards per rush) and 7 rushing tds and only 12 passes against Texas Tech. They absolutely dominated Texas Tech on offense. These are very good stats but not that uncommon for a Bielema coached game. Do you think Texas Tech was stacking the box that game? I do.

I do agree though that we need to take more shots downfield, but I'm not sure JR is the guy to do it.

Idea for the next podcast ... Gary B needs to take back ownership of the football program. He needs to start his succession planning - not sure when he'll execute on it...but he needs to get to work. Recruiting is at stake, butts in seats are at stake, wins and losses are at stake, his own reputation is at stake.

The zone blocking is not working and it really doesn't work when you have running backs like Weisman and Bullock. The first one is too slow and isn't a running back and the second can't read blocks to save his life. He should have been converted to a slot receiver two years ago.

Haven't been able to stomach thinking about game since Saturday let alone read/listen to analysis. First exposure was listening to podcast over lunch hour. I'm used to fan meltdowns after nearly every game. But when Jon D Miller (Mr. Levelheaded) is in meltdown mode; "Holy ****!"

Jon, do you still think JR arm is not a issue ?. Last year you said you thought it was a timing issue. Just wondering about you thoughts

I'd say it's mostly timing. The big thing to look at is when he actually has a shot at throwing long it's usually slightly late. His arm isn't horrible, but it's not like CJ's, he can't be indecisive.

Only had a chance to listen to part of the podcast and I do agree with Deace one bad hire and it mucks up everything for a long time. It no longer matters how much tradition/resources you have once that hole is dug it is harder than **** to get out of it.

Agree the biggest thing I see with Rudock and the deep passes is his indecision. I think it's a combination of fear of a interception and not letting the play develop. Just like two of his sacks yesterday. He freaked out when he didn't have someone open right away and then tried to run without keeping his eyes downfield.

also, just watched some clips from the last ISU drive. Two things: Bower was half a second too late turning his head around or he would have had a pick 6, the Jewel holding call was BS. ISU was playing the same way on Iowa's TEs and WRs and no calls.

I don't think you can blame Davis for all this as Ferentz controls the running game and won't change. Davis is the one who appears to want to get CJ on the field more and Kirk of course is hesitant.

They had one good receiver. Iowa has 4/5? Their defense has 7 or 8 frosh/sophs on it. Their defense is smaller than Iowa. 6.0 linebacker, 5.7 db. Iowa has at least two players that may be all B1G players, Davis and King. Their offense lost 2/3 starters since the season started. They have one running back to speak of. Their offensive line should have been no problem for Iowa's highly touted defensive line. Iowa's offensive line, Scherff (NFL 1st rounder) and the rest are supposedly among the best in the B1G. Their QB showed he is better than Ruddock, but prior to the game it was a least a push.

I'll agree with you that talent-wise we are (or at least should be) outmanned by Iowa on both lines, and it isn't even close, and is a big reason why Iowa should have won the game.

At all the other positions, I'm not so sure. King is definitely the best CB, but I'd also argue both of our starters are better than Mabin. Is Iowa better at S? We start a RFr and RSo, but my understanding is that S play hasn't been good for Iowa either, and that's with upperclassmen. We're both inexperienced with WOs playing key roles at the LB position.

RB hasn't seen good production from either team, but recruiting rankings favor ISU. TE recruiting rankings and depth favor Iowa, while ISU has a first team all Big XII TE. QB play and recruiting rankings have been pretty similar, with Rudock having typically played better at the end of games than Richardson.

Finally, I've heard Jon mention several times how this is the most talented receiving group that Iowa has had under Ferentz, but I don't see it. First, the production doesn't seem to be there, and the recruiting rankings don't indicate it either. They're not bad, just average. Again, comparing Iowa and ISU, production has been similar, and recruiting rankings favor ISU, even without our best WR (Bundrage).

"We're an IBM in a Microsoft world."...........Steve Deace aptly frames where we're at.

So many companies have been at a similar point in their history. Many make the necessary changes and stay competitive. Then there are others that don't. Many of them are not around today.

I don't ever wish injury on any of our guys but I'd sure like to see one game that features CJ at qb, Daniels at rb and not take either out for the entire game. I may be wrong but I am guessing even with our lack luster play calling these two guys could make Greg Davis look better than he is. We do have speed on the outside and a three yard out/slant with Willies, Powell or Austin should go for more than 3 assuming CJ hits them in stride. I agree Davis needs to go but get the right damn players in position to make plays and believe it or not this offense might be more serviceable than we think. Now if Kirk continues to walk into a brick wall like he has been bysending Vandenberg on the 9 route and run Wiesman up the gut into a 9+ man front then we will never know but get out of your own way Kirk… Jesus.
