Miller & Deace: Breaking Down Iowa's Loss to ISU

I enjoy listening to the podcasts. I wish it was on the winning side of things (this one), but very truthful and transparent. Unless things really, really, really turn around....you gotta have change at the end of this year on the offensive side of the ball.

Jon, GD probably does need to go. I think I disagree with you on the amount of culpability at JR's feet. Go look at the 3rd down incomplete pass to Hillyer (tying fg drive), JR absolutely missed a wide open #87 and he was not under pressure. I have counted 6 missed TD's passes (deep) that could change the complexion of each of the three games, so far.

At this point, if you are going to get rid of GD, if BF has any ability to be an OC, let him be an interim OC and cut ties with GD, now. But, if you don't get rid of GD, now, then you have to focus on the qb play and the multiple misses, deep, by JR and how that is affecting the running game.

I agree with Deace. The time is now to find the next HC because we can get ahead of the curve on getting the next best recruiting HC. I think it is time to call it like it is. KF has spent all of his goodwill, here. Iowa is basically a .500 program in the last 10 years. Just because he is a nice guy doesn't mean he gets to dictate when he steps down, or is encouraged to step down.

Not buying the give Brian a shot. He is the offensive line coach and these guys can even run block. That's one of the first things you work on in high school football.

Iowa lost to a team they outmanned in nearly every position. A lot of us were critical of Belema when he was at Wisconsin, but when it came to making hard decisions he did it. Get rid of Davis now. Right now this isn't even a 8-4 team. I see wins at Purdue, Indiana. Maybe Northwestern and Minnesota.

I don't agree that we outmanned them in nearly every position. The eye test told me they were as talented as we were. Maybe it was Kirk's inability to use the best playmakers at every position, but the talent looked pretty even to me out there.

They had one good receiver. Iowa has 4/5? Their defense has 7 or 8 frosh/sophs on it. Their defense is smaller than Iowa. 6.0 linebacker, 5.7 db. Iowa has at least two players that may be all B1G players, Davis and King. Their offense lost 2/3 starters since the season started. They have one running back to speak of. Their offensive line should have been no problem for Iowa's highly touted defensive line. Iowa's offensive line, Scherff (NFL 1st rounder) and the rest are supposedly among the best in the B1G. Their QB showed he is better than Ruddock, but prior to the game it was a least a push.

Steve, you've touched on a very polarizing point, as it relates to KF. KF coached teams allow an undermanned opponent to look much better than what they really are. ISU was undermanned from a personnel stand point and a talent stand point; yet they dictated to us, as did UNI and BSU.

Great podcast, Jon. A point that you sort of touched on that needs to be addressed is IF Barta will have the opportunity to make the next hire, or if his future rests on Kirk’s shoulders.

So true. If you want to see how untalented isu really is, just watch the rest of their games this year.

That is as damning of an indictment of Kirk Ferentz as I have ever read.

I think GD needs to go too. But I also think at this point, if you are going to keep him, then you have to make a change at QB. As much as I liked Jake last year, we need a guy with confidence out there, and who the team will rally around. Jake isn't the guy right now. I would like to say I'm not that typical fan who calls for the backup QB all the time, but I have done it at least twice.
Ricky over Jake, and Brad over Kyle. In 2012, I would have like to see Jake get some snaps, not necessarily take over, but in the Penn State game where JVB was horrible, we were getting pounded, I still don't understand why we wouldn't give the backup a little experience. Once the season is lost, you might as well try some new things.
I don't like the body language of the offense right now. They need a spark in the worst way.

Anyone know the name of the opening song that's played at the beginning of the podcast. I probably should know I but it's escaping me. Would be a great song to play on 3rd down at Kinnick I think.

Jon, do you still think JR arm is not a issue ?. Last year you said you thought it was a timing issue. Just wondering about you thoughts

Kirk makes teams look better than they really are. Indiana State put up like 42 points against Ball State over the weekend.
