Miller: And Then It Was Over

Emotional roller coaster.

That’s how I would describe this Iowa basketball season. That’s how I would describe the months of February and March. That’s how I would describe this last week. That’s how I would describe March 19th.

When the year began, I was certain Iowa’s season would wind up in the NCAA tournament. It did, but barely, in the form of a First Four game…or play in game, if you will.

Both Iowa and Tennessee were better than 11 seeds, but at the same time they weren’t any better than that.
Over a 30-plus game season, you are what your record says you are. Iowa is a team that flashed and at times played some of the most exciting basketball we have seen in at least a decade, if not two of them.

However, over the course of their last eight games the Hawkeyes lost seven times. Most of those losses came the same way; Iowa would lead early, sometimes by more than 10 points or more. Iowa led at the half in most all of those losses, but the Iowa defense and offense would sputter too much and too often.

At one time, when Iowa was 16-4 and ranked 10th in the nation, we were wondering ‘what might have been’ as their four losses came to teams who were ranked and Iowa had a comfortable lead in each contest.

Now, at the end of the line, there is no ‘what might have been’; they are what they are…or they were what they were.

What were they?

While incredibly frustrating, they were also incredibly exhilarating.

While they could leave you feeling empty at times, they also packed the arena to the gills more often than not for the first time in a decade.

While the last month has been just this side of rank, they also returned to the rankings for the first time in nearly a decade and lived there most of the year.

They had us all looking at the rankings on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. They had us counting down the days and hours until the next game. They had us looking forward through a brutal winter.

They helped make Iowa basketball relevant again. They get a big assist from last year’s Iowa team, as when you count Iowa’s NIT run and add it to the start of this year’s schedule, Iowa had won 20 of its previous 25 games as of January 28th. After Iowa loss to Tennessee, there were more users on our message boards at one time than at any other point in time in the existence of the site.

That’s not bad…not bad at all.

Do we end this season feeling empty? Some will…some will and it will pass. Some will and they will allow it to linger as if they have been personally slighted. That’s too bad for them, but there are more and more people like that all the time…or perhaps they just live on message boards or on social media. Nah, they aren’t just there.

They have always been around it’s just that now they are easy to spot.

The entire #TeamPat thing really helped add some perspective on things for me. Pat McCaffery’s surgery and ongoing medical analysis definitely brought a few things home. Seeing Iowa fans come together and really all of college basketball rally around Iowa and the McCaffery’s was a real cool thing. Fred Hoiberg, the truest Cyclone of them all, shone through with class yet again on this day….as did countless others.

I am disappointed that this team didn’t reach its full potential..or rather that they reached it in January and couldn’t hold onto it for whatever reason.

There will be those who will want to know all of the reasons for the slide, collapse, whatever you want to call it. We may never know them all or maybe it’s as simple as this team wasn’t built the way we thought it was.

Regardless, it’s over. Iowa was 20-13 where last year they were 25-13. Devyn Marble leaves Iowa as one of it’s Top Five scorers of all time. Aaron White has scored over 1,300 career points and could pass Marble next year and has a shot at #2 all time.

Adam Woodbury scored 16 points on 8-11 shooting to go along with 8 boards. Some may laught at me but I think Woodbury will be capable of doing that every night as a senior; 13 & 6 is what I will expect as an average next year. Peter Jok scored 10 points and he is going to fill the rim next year; he’s only scratched the surface of what he can do.

Jarrod Uthoff might be the most intriguing mismatch on the team if he can play aggressively more often than not. Mike Gesell proved he can play point in this league. Gabe Olaseni is not done improving. Josh Oglesby can score more for this team and oh by the way he shot over 40% from three this year.

Iowa also brings in Juco PG Trey Dickerson and is in the running for his pal Willie Atwood, the best PF in the Juco ranks. They may try to take a run at PF Anthony Lee who is transferring from Temple and could play right away; his parents live in the Quad Cities and he’s played in the PTL.

All is not lost for next year. I am not going to sit here and pee on you and tell you it’s rainin by saying next year will be addition by subtraction. Iowa is losing a ton of production in Marble, Basabe and McCabe. However, I do think some players will grow in their absence. It will be interesting to see how McCaffery handles the team next year; is 10 deep too many?

There are many fascinating angles to all of this. Next year should be a lot of fun. Let’s hope it comes on the heels of a football team that lives up to its promise.

Wait a second…football…hey, spring football starts soon!

Just in time.

<<sigh>>

It's disappointing to see a team just not get it.

Good points to consider.

These seniors made Iowa relevant again when the program was laughable. Props to them.

Next year could be better - I think this team need to be shaken up a bit however. Maybe it will be naturally next year.

But this group of guys together just couldn't make it happen when it matters the last two years.

One issue is outside shooting - we need more guys that are legit threats from the outside and who are not afraid to let it go.

Very true. Very much looking forward to some new players, returning players in new roles, and hopefully some better play late in games. I would add that the over-playing on D needs to be addressed. Whether this is a systematic situation that is coached or player doing it on their own, it needs to be fixed.

Oglesby is not afraid to let it go, but other than the Ohio State/Minnesota games, he hasn't had that clutch shot, like a Kent McCausland, Matt Gatens, or a Kevin Gamble.
Too bad, Matt Gatens never played in a "March situation."

People keep talking about outside shooting. But part of the problem is the team didn't have perimeter players who can beat people off the dribble and have the strength to finish at the rim. Basically the team was built to score on the break, and that's it.

The main thing the Hawks are losing is an already limited strength. McCabe, Basabe, and Marble are not world beaters physically, but each is stronger than any of the guys currently on the roster who will be filling their shoes next year.

Here's hoping Dickerson, Uhl and a PF dramatically increase this team's physical play next year.

Teams have figured out the book on Iowa basketball this past month.
1. Hold the ball for the entire shot clock. Iowa will give you an open look as the clock winds down. I can count numerous times hearing the shot clock go off and a half second later, see an opposing shot go through the net.
2. By holding the ball, it slows the game down, and Iowa is best in an up tempo game, thus nullifying Iowa's big advantage.
3. Teams have stopped hitting the offensive glass and are just getting back on Defense. This limits Iowa's transition game, which is how they score in bunches.

By doing the three points above, Iowa is forced into a half court game. Iowa is a bad shooting team from the perimeter, has only one guy who can, somewhat, create his own shot, and has zero threat in the post.

Oh, and there seems to be no leadership, poor team chemistry, and guys not having any fun. It could be that the players don't like each other. Guys not getting minutes may resent the guys that are.

The team looks mentally defeated. Did you see the players' reactions when Northwestern hit that 3 at the buzzer to end the half? All of their heads went down and their shoulders slumped. They look like they've given up, and with the numerous close defeats this past year, it looks like it has taken all the joy out of playing and I can't say I blame them. For many, it feels like this season can't end soon enough. It's really unfortunate, because this team had so much potential.
As Jets fans would say, Just-End-The-Season.

The coaches have responsibility, as well, letting this team get away from them. Look at the new coaches in the B1G at Northwestern (Collins), Nebraska (Myles) and Minnesota (Pitino).
All three of them figured out how to play as a team.
Why can't the experienced Iowa coaching staff figure it out? Just drives me insane.

I believe now that the three seniors are graduating, there is no more direct tie-in to the stink of the Lickliter era.

That can't be a bad thing.

That can't be a bad thing.

But they will also be remembered to taking that stink, fumigate Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and have the fans return to see some, at time, exciting basketball, in Iowa City.
On the football side, I remember players like Aaron Kampman, who helped resurge the football program.
Basabe, Marble and McCabe will be remembered for be a part of the turnaround.

Serious gut check for those that return and the newbee's coming aboard.....we need quick athletic guards that can create, we need big, physical forwards that can rebound, but most of all we need an attitude that says..."We will win" everytime we see the court....I'm not so disappointed in the effort because it was there, I'm mostly upset that there seemed to no emotion...what the hell is wrong with high fives, a few screams, a few chest bumps.....get excited and get into the game.....at times we played scared, and when there's blood in the water, well, we all know the sharks are circling....If college basketball were only 35 minutes long, we would be undefeated, so, I guess we need to find a way to finish the last 5 minutes, because the NCAA won't shorten the games by 5 minutes just to please the Iowa faithful....anyway, carry on, get tougher Iowa, and learn to finish, and learn to win....

I will keep it simple & just say that I really enjoy reading your perspective on things Jon, it always seems to be pretty accurate. Thanks also for being a voice of reason, the negative minority can be overwellming sometimes.

This team didn't reach it's potential. Two years in a row 6th in the big and that is what I predict for next season until they show me otherwise.

This was a compelling team to watch. However, they turned out to be a very average team and the end, in quasi tourney-land, was fitting. The potential was there to be very good. However, (and this started last year) when it was crunch time, they folded more often than not. Watching that as a fan is quite maddening. Today is the opening Thursday of the NCAA tourney and Iowa's team is eating wings and drinking beer at The Vine. I think it's fair to call this year a disappointment.

Good take Jon.

Tough year, but its kinda nice to have lofty expectations again.

Marble will be missed but overall I think skill level will be up next year.

This team was oh so close so many times.

Thanks Seniors ! Lots of solid memories Wild Bull, Slime, and RDM !!!!

All I have to say this morning is that this game was indeed a microcosm of this season, like Jon said. The last two seasons, actually. You could just see it coming last night: Build a double digit lead early, let them hang around and go on a run into the half and make the game tight. Nip & tuck in the second half and lose in the last minute (or overtime). That's been the formula, and it was followed to a tee once again last night.

After being on/near the bubble last year, barely squeaking in and losing in the play in game this year makes this one of the most disappointing basketball seasons since probably 2004-05, or 2001-02 for sure.

"At least Lick is gone!" rings pretty hollow this morning. Based on where this program was a year ago (near/on the bubble, run to NIT title game), I don't feel that much progress was made this season, and even less progress was made in the ability to close tight games..

Do I feel "personally slighted"? Not sure what that means exactly, but no I don't take it personally. Iowa athletics don't owe me anything, nor do I owe it anything. The book is closed on this season and "Unfulfilled Potential" is what will always come to mind when I look back at this season. On the whole, this year was not very enjoyable. That streak of games that gut us into the Top 10 - Top 15 will be overshadowed by losing 7 of 8 to end the year. It's not where you start. It's not where you are mid-season. It's where you finish, that really tells the tale.

From Final Four to First Four indeed. (No, I never really bought into the Final Four hype)

I know you don't like .jpgs being posted Jon, but sometimes a picture does say a 1000 words.

Good article. I think every Hawkeye player will work hard to improve, and we could see a player or two make huge strides. Who knows, Meyer may help a lot in the post next year. I predict a better finish in the conference next year, hopefully a tougher OOC schedule, a strong finish, and a bid to The Dance (and not a First Four situation).

Go Hawkeyes!

Despite the skid the seniors went out on, I agreed with Fran 100% last night when he credited them with making the program relevant again. They were there every step of the transformation and while we're still not where we want to be the fact is that we've come along way in a short time.

In response to the debate about the outside shooting, I'm not sure if getting better "shooters" is the solution. I think it starts with our bigs and the ability of our guards to penetrate. If we can play inside out, rather than simply playing around the perimeter I think the shooting will improve leaps and bounds. If we look inside to our bigs more and our guards can do a better job of attacking the basket and the paint defenses will collapse more and the perimeter will open up. The problem now, IMO is that we either play around the perimeter and allow defenses to basically stay home, or when we go inside it doesn't come back out. We need to balance the offense and improve our touches and scoring down low to get better results outside.

I don't understand how anyone can view this season as anything but a complete failure of every player and coach. We clearly had a very good team that should of been looking at a deep tournament run and then around 6 weeks ago, something happened. I have no idea what it was but Fran lost all control of the team and ceased making any rational decisions in regard to rotations and the players quit. Overtime last night was a microcosm of the whole season, the team quit. I can't recall an Iowa team in any sport I was more disappointed in than this team (maybe the "fat cat" football team but they didn't have the level of talent this team did). I am not looking forward to next season, we won't be better and it is time for another rebuild.
