The past few days leading up to today's game I told several friends I thought Iowa would lose this game. I said this in large part because I watched the game the prior week as Michigan shot itself in the foot over and over again en route to its first loss of the season at Mich St. I rationalized that those mistakes would be cleaned up during a week of practice, the team would be ultra fired up coming off a loss to a big rival, not to mention its their homecoming. Couple that with Iowa's recent rich tradition of struggling with dual threat QBs, and going on the road to a hostile environment. Adding that all up, it seemed like this game was set up for Michigan to grab the W.
But as we all saw Michigan did not clean up those costly errors that lost them any chance of beating Sparty. They proceeded to allow interior penetration during a fg try which allowed the kick to be blocked, fumbled in the red zone, threw several bad interceptions, picked up costly penalties throughout the entire game, and managed to place two kickoffs out of bounds in the 4th quarter. Richrod's face said it all as the cameraman found his mug after nearly every Michigan miscue.
All that said, after two games against quality opponents, you have to start to really question if Richrod is going to make it in the Big10. At WV they just outscored everybody - didn't matter if the defense was any good. In smashmouth football Big 10 country you're not going to be able to outrun everybody in a track meet every week. Why is the team so undisciplined? It makes you're wonder if Richrod and staff are not focusing on limiting the mistakes during practice but are more focused on getting up to the line of scrimmage and getting the play off quickly.
The season is still relatively young and time will tell if the mistakes will get cleaned up. But today, that team looked very undisciplined. And the Hawks made them pay for their mistakes
