No doubt Ott was screwed. I still wonder why after a yr or two he didn't try rehabbing and getting a shot at the NFL. He was more then good enough. I know that's tough to do but golly if anyone coulda sat out a yr or two and got back in I woulda bet on him. Iowa woulda let him keep training and whatnot I would think. Just sucks how everything went for himDrew Ott still remains the cautionary tale of the guy who gave exactly everything he had to the team but probably should have left 1 year early for the NFL. An amazing talent that got hurt his senior year, rushed backed too fast and then played just enough games that he could not redshirt.
Ott really could have used another year at Iowa to come back from injury. In fact it almost feels like the old redshirt rules were modified with him in mind. Ott really only had 2 years where he played full seasons. Ott had barely played as a freshman but at the time there was no 4 game max rule for redshirt. Once you played, you would lose your chance for a redshirt unless you got hurt.
Now you look at COVID players sometimes playing in 6 different seasons and you really feel like Ott got screwed over even more.
King has done alright for himself. Going a yr earlier woulda gotten him to his 2nd contract sooner but hard telling how the chips fall had he done that with whatever team he'd have been on. I don't think he has many complaints he's been healthy for the most part and doing alright. If he can get one more nice contract that'd be great for him.Desmond King is another interesting case of whether he should have left 1 year early for the NFL. The Jim Thorpe winner led the country with 8 picks his junior year. King must have been given a heads up he would not be drafted high and it was important to his mother that he graduate, so he came back for his senior year.
Fortunately King did not get hurt and King also used his senior year to work on his kick return skills. Still it did not seem to help his draft status as King fell all the way to the 5th round. Bit it turned out those kick return skills did help out after all as he was used to return kicks for his first team the Chargers and King managed to stick around for multiple years in the NFL. In fact King was named NFL first team all-pro as DB and 2nd team all-pro as a KR in 2018.
The opposite seem to happen to CB Josh Jackson, who had a breakout year his junior season, left a year early and got drafted in the 2nd round. But his NFL career did not seem to last that long. Not saying it would have been different if Jackson stayed his senior season and he probably did the right thing cashing in when he had the chance. But you never know. Mayne he could have used another year in college to develop his skills.

I figured he was young enough that even at 24-25 maybe he'd get a shot. But at some point a guy is sick and tired of being sick and tired. Doing rehab nonstop would be brutal. Can't blame him just sucks he got that short end of the stickI can't remember where I saw the story, but he definitely did the rehab and try again thing. But he continued to have horrible injury luck, with just the worst possible timing. Sometimes life just kicks you in the balls. It sounds like the farming thing is working out pretty well for him.
To be honest, with his family's crop and livestock operations he's probably financially way better off having not played. I 100% get that every football player's dream is to play in the league, but it has to help that he has a business to run and inherit one day. I read a story a few years ago that said they had like 1,750 acres in nebraska, if it's split 75/25 corn to beans today, at 170/50 bushels respectively, at market prices that's roughly $2 million in revenue before expenses a year. Article said they had cattle as well. His wife's a teacher at the local school if I remember right...pretty good life for a guy if you ask me.I figured he was young enough that even at 24-25 maybe he'd get a shot.
