Mel needs to ride the Pine

You guys have no idea what the **** you are talking about. Mel has one bad game and everyone is ready to crucify the kid? He was stuck guarding one of the top players in college basketball, and another post who had 50 pounds on him. Mel got in foul trouble, and thus was taken out of the flow of the game. And people suggesting he didn't work hard in the offseason, has too big an ego, or will transfer at the end of the year need to get a clue. I can't wait for him to earn first team all-big ten and make you haters eat your words.

Well, he didn't exactly help himself by admitting that he didn't have his head in the game after one of the cupcake games. The fact that he hasn't looked much better since then makes the connection an easy one to make.

I agree that overall Basabe's level of play has been disappointing so far this year but I think the predictions that he'll transfer are a little premature.

Poor performances due to a lack of effort are not acceptable, but for all we know so far there could be other factors contributing to Mel's lack of productivity. One thing we all know for sure was that last year Mel over achieved big time! Not only was he a true frosh but he was originally a mid-major recruit who got to play major conf ball.

Let's not throw Basabe to the wolves just yet, there are still a lot if games (even real games) to be played. He has a ton of potential and is still 19 years old. Even though he exceeded expectations last year doesn't mean he won't still experience some growing pains.

Plus Fran has shown multiple times that he will bench Basabe if he's not playing up to par, if Mel continues to underperform then Fran will sit him and McCabe, White and Olaseni will pick up those extra minutes. Let's just hope it doesn't come to that because spank was right, we need Basabe.

Predict Mel is gone at the end of this season.

I'm disappointed in some of the people on here who are already writing Mel off. This was what, the 4th game of the season? I am frustrated with his play as well, but I realize that he is still one of the best players on the team. It isn't like he was the only player who was off today...

Also, whether you want to believe it or not, these are college athletes. They are young adults who have lives outside of the sport they play. Who knows what is going on in his personal life. He could be having personal issues that are affecting his play, whether that be family, friends, a girl, school, health, etc...

I'm not trying to make excuses for him, but I'm not going to sit here and call him slime and hope he transfers, because he hasn't met expectations so far this season, because I don't KNOW what is going on. The kid has talent and I'm not convinced that he has a huge ego either. I know a lot of us are expecting great things from this program and a lot of us had/have huge expectations of MB, but just because he is not having a good season so far (and it is still very early) don't write him off just yet and think that he sucks.

Give the kid a break.

For reference, in Iowa's fourth game of the season last year, vs. Alabama, Basabe had 0 points (0/1 FG, 0/4 FT), 1 blk, 3 rbd, 2 fouls, and 2 turnovers in just 11 minutes of play. Up to that point in the season, Basabe was averaging 5.3 ppg and 6.3 rpg. He didn't really get it going until December. I know there was a general consensus that with an offseason in a college conditioning program and the opportunity to try out (and work out) with the U19 team, Basabe would start off the year stronger this year. Unfortunately, those hopes have been thus far dashed, but I don't think that alone is enough to give up hope. It could very well be that it will take Basabe a couple weeks to get in a groove every year. It might be some sort of indictment (maybe), but I don't think it would be that serious of an issue if he just takes time to get into a groove after the season starts.

If he still hasn't fallen into a groove after the Clemson game, I can maybe see benching him and hoping he responds, but I think taking a wait and see approach is best.

Yes, mel showed a lack of effort and seemed to be overmatched, yadda yadda yadda. I think what needs to be addressed is the amount of minutes Mccabe is getting. If you play the 4 spot at 6'6 or 6'7 you need to be able to get off your feet (which Zach can't) or knock down shots (which he hasn't). I think he plays hard and everything, but we got outrebounded by 16 yesterday... We need some size inside. And to add to it, he didn't even score yesterday which seems impossible given the amount of post moves he made.

Re: Melsahn Basabe calls cupcakes "bums"

MB is quickly gaining the reputation of being a lazy bum himself. Word spreading quickly he takes this same approach in the classroom.

If he doesn't step it up, and FAST, he will get passed by, or I smell another transfer.

Marble isn't too far behind either.

This is where we find out more about Fran, can he manage ego's?
Don't you have to actually be good to have an ego? These guys are not good at least not right now. Marble especially...he has yet to impress me in a Hawkeyes uniform.

I thought we weren't suppose to call players out. Earlier on this board people were saying he would leave early for the NBA and now they are saying he should ride the pine. Hilarious. He is a good player.

Mel was so bad today. Worst part is he was laughing on th bench most of the game

Mel has been terrible all year, he has regressed so much from last year it is a wonder what kind of coaching he got to make him drop off so much. The worst part of it is that acts like he doesn't give a rats butt either...that would keep his butt on my bench period.

Matt Gatens B1G all Frosh - never again on league post-season lists.
Eric May B1G all Frosh - never again on league post-season lists.
Mel Basabe B1G all Frosh - ...

Mel can score 5 points every game and i wouldnt ask for him to be benched. The key here is effort and attitude. See Aaron White.

The reality is Mel had plenty of games he disappeared in last year also. While it's disappointing to see, and I'd have thought he'd grow out of it, it might just be something that sticks to him.

That said his biggest problem against Creighton is he saw an insta-double every time he saw the ball and he hasn't shown that he can effectively pass the ball out of it yet. Until he does expect the double treatment to continue. I think it's fair to say everyone close to the situation is frustrated by this, perhaps no one more so than Mel.
