Mel needs to ride the Pine

Pretty bold statement to make from the anonymity of a message board and with nothing to back up your argument.

I agree with him. If he was just missing shots I wouldn't be down on him. It's his complete lack of effort on both ends of the court that are inexcusable. He got off 3 shots today. His fouls were as a result of lazy defense and he looks like he's too cool to be bothered to even be there. I'm incredibly disappointed with Mel thus far this season. Really liking Oglesby and McCabe however.

He needs to wake up. Zach had a few post good post moves today but couldn't get them to fall.

Whatever's wrong..someone said he's sick, I hope that's true cause that'll mean he'll get over it soon. But if he plays like he did today I want him to sit as well. If that makes me an internet tough guy, then tough guy I am! I just want the best players on the court.

I went to the NIU game & couldn't help but notice that Mel was mailing it in. I thought it was because of the lack of a worthy opponent. I went to the game today and it seemed like he didn't even bother to mail it in. Something changed in him during the off season, he acts like he's not into the game at all.

After Chicago St. Mel admitted to not bringing his full effort. Well, 4 games into the season and Im still waiting for his full effort....

From what i hear, this isnt an anomaly...

i think being invited to the Under 19 USA Team was mistake and the early BT accolades went to his head, he is acting like he just has to show up, but he doesn't he has to play harder, this was a very good showing of why McDermott was selected and Basabe wasn't
he has to play hard every game and if it take coach benching him so be it;
whatever it takes to make this team better, he has to realize he can lose his starting spot

I'm kind of afraid of a Mel deflection from the team at some point in the future. I hope not and he gets things straightened out well before that would ever happen.

His baseline defense was like a sieve...guys were just stepping around him...no effort. Something is wrong is his world...

Mel always has seemed aloof to me when I watch games. Even when things are going his way he has a nonchalant look to him. I just think that's the way he carries himself. When things are going good, you don't notice it but when things are going bad you want to shake him because he doesn't look like he cares. Don't take this as an excuse for his play today, because he stunk up the place(along with most of the others). It's going to be a lot easier for us to be competitve this yr if hes playing well.

Most of the guys out there needed to ride the pine. Awful effort....not because of the outcome, but because of the lack of focus and effort defensively. I won't be able to watch them if they continue on that road.

Melsahn Basabe calls cupcakes "bums"

“It puts us back in reality,” Basabe said. “We’re not where we need to be. Guys look at themselves and need to step it up because those are the real games. Anybody can beat them bums and teams of lower caliber. We’re a Big Ten team. We’re supposed to beat them by 40-50 points.”

Here's hoping Mel can step up next time in a "real game".

Re: Melsahn Basabe calls cupcakes "bums"

More in Rick Brown's article:

“We’re a Big Ten team,” Iowa forward Melsahn Basabe said when asked about the three blowout victories to start the season. “You’re supposed to beat all those teams by 40 to 50 points. We’re supposed to beat them by more, honestly. Think about it. You’re supposed to kill teams like that. It gets tougher. We’re in the Big Ten. That was a Missouri Valley team. Granted, I think they might be Top 25. But it can get tougher than Creighton. It could be a team with more athletes than Creighton, who are just as skilled. Michigan State, Ohio State, those guys have more skill than Creighton or more skill but higher athleticism. Then what are you going to do? It ain’t gonna get no easier. We got to improve.”

Re: Melsahn Basabe calls cupcakes "bums"

It's good to hear Mel say he wasn't doing anything, it shows that he knows he needs to step it up. I was worried he had become apathetic.
