Mel Basabe says he's officially decommitted from Siena

I see this in his list of Tweets - "Shout out to my Son Chad Babel.... helping me get my game right." Chad Babel is a former coach Basabe's AAU team, now a grad assistant at Arkansas. Maybe competition for Iowa?

Not when him and Francis have a great relationship. Francis recruited him to Siena. I see him at Iowa.

McCaffery and Francis have been hard at work with recruiting and good ones too: Chasson Randle, Marcus Paige, Josh Ogelsby, Devin Coleman, John Wilkins, Jarrod Uthoff and Adam Woodbury. Not going to have room for all of them, would be an all-star roster, but if they can pull in a few of these guys we will be well set!!

If we get this Basabe...I'm sold on Fran...the kid looks like a real talent from the videos I watched...

This kid has 1 offer from a major school...and that's Iowa. All the rest are from mid-majors. If you are sold on Frans recruiting on this then you a pretty easy to please.

Also, I'm not saying Fran is a bad recruiter or Basabe isn't worth a scholarship, but we need better recruits than Basabe to be successful in the Big 10. I'm talking 2 top 150 players each year (consensus, not just scout.com) with one being top 50. The top half of the Big 10 brings in a class like that or better 3 out of 4 recruiting years.

St. John's and Seton Hall are not major schools? George Mason four years removed from a Final Four run is not a good offer?

You do know that recruiting services are not 100% accurate right? They hype guys that turn out to be busts, and they miss guys that end up being stars. Rautins at Syracuse? Wasn't he a walk-on? Wesley Johnson (Big East POY and soon to be NBA lottery pick)? 2 star recruit. Even at Sienna, I have looked up and down Scout and Rivals, and couldn't find Kenny Hasbrouck's ranking out of HS anywhere. Those services miss on guys all the time.

So I'm not going to base my opinion of Coach's recruiting off of the number of stars next to a player's name. I'm going to base it off of what that player does in the Black and Gold.

Sure they miss guys...but are they right more than they are wrong? Absolutely. I hope we do find some diamonds in the rough...but they are few and far between. Look at when Iowa was successful the past 10 years? Horner, Brunner, Haluska....all consensus top 150 players. Now look at when Iowa was not successful....not many highly recruited players to be found. You think that was just a coincidence?

To expand for the group that believes (stars don't mean anything). This is the final rankings of basketball for this year. What do 10 out of the top 11 teams have in common? They all consistently bring in top rated talent (using the recruiting services). Butler is obviously an exception to the rule for 2010 (but you don't see these often). Its not a tough formula...you get the best players...you typically have the better team.

1 Duke (31) 33-5 775
2 Butler 32-4 739
3 West Virginia 31-6 696
4 Michigan State 28-8 654
5 Kentucky 35-3 650
6 Kansas 33-3 604
7 Kansas State 29-8 573
8 Syracuse 30-5 554
9 Tennessee 28-9 494
10 Baylor 28-8 487
11 Ohio State 29-8 483

You certainly don't seem to hope we find a diamond in the rough. You're already dismissing a kid because he's not highly rated by the recruiting services. He may not have an offer from other major schools, but he's got a long list of schools that are interested. After a summer of AAU, I'm sure he's going to get some offers from those schools. Even if he only got offered by a quarter of them, it'd be a pretty impressive list.

I DO hope we find a diamond in the rough. I just don't want our 2010-11 class to fill up with nothing but guys with mid-major offers, because chances are they will all be just that...mid major players. This is exactly why Lick isn't coaching at Iowa anymore. Every time Lick got a guy to commit you could come to the boards and hear all the excuses on why he didn't have better offers (diamond in the rough, played for a small school, committed to us early, etc, etc)...but the reality was...they were just mid major players recruited to a big conference and all the coaching in the world wasn't going to help them in the Big 10. I don't want to go down that road again.

All that being said...Basabe is a great get this late in the 2010 class. I would welcome him with open arms. I also hope we bank a few scholarships and go after some great talent in 2011.

At this point, why even bother to apply a ''top 150'' standard to any recruits we are hoping to plug in to replace the departed players...unrealistic to expect Fran to get players like that for 2010. I would be very happy with Basabe,if we can get him, based on a few reports. I read an illini fan who gave an unsolicited opinion on Basabe after he saw him play this past season for St Marks, and he said that he could see him giving the illini trouble...sounds good to me.

Next year, the standard moves up, but even then it is hard to grab top 100 unless it is Randle who already had interest. Hopefully, recruits that have interest from tourny type programs.

We are at a bottom point in the program, we have to face that...lower than when SA or Lick took over the program, coming off the worst 3 year run in program history...cannnot get lower. Gonna take an extra year to get in the hunt for the top 100 players...probably be 2012...unless we get lucky.

As I have said, and shown, over and over. Major conference programs that successfully rebuild, do it quickly. Accordingly, 2012 will be too late if Caff is not able to upgrade this year and next. My feeling is he needs a guy like Basabe and an out of the blue guy that is better than Basabe this year and then three more 3* and above guys next year. That will set the stage for the big haul in 2012. While the second guy this year might not have the immediate stars, it has to become clear he really is a true exciting talent. Next year, I fully believe FM has the ability to pull three really good players.
