Me thinks the players win games despite the coaching

I know I am stating the obvious, but it seems like all the weird timed timeouts, inability to cover onside kicks, penalties after timeouts, strange play calling and player rotations, etc are all coaching issues. Just seems to me that our players win despite our shaky at best coaching. Bless the guys for playing their buns off.

We should have beat the ever loving heck out of IU on Sat and instead let them hang around. Will our coaches not let the guys just blow someone out for once?

Both onsides were because the coaches failed to jump on the ball.

When we had to call timeouts with 12 and 10 men on the field, it was because the coaches forgot to run out onto the field.

Penalties after timeouts? Now you're making stuff up. We are the 3rd least penalized team in the nation, so if you are going to talk penalties, this is a huge positive for the coaching staff.

^^^ I wouldn't say that the coaches have zero responsibility for what happens on the field. One play here and there, sure. But if the players keep making the same mistakes over and over again, then yeah, that's coaching. The problem recovering onside kicks or stopping fake punts has been going on for a while now.

Not to feed the troll or anything, though.

Yes the same things keep happening over and over. Hence my point.

and sometimes players win in spite of themselves.

Timeouts in first half due to 12-men and 10-men on field -- that's not on the coaches; that's on players.

Penalties after timeouts? How is that a coaching problem.

Strange play-calling? This was the best play calling of the season. And everyone knew that snooze control was going to happen in 2nd half with 17 point lead. No big deal.

Onside kicks. The first one was on the receiving team front line. I saw middle man motion his hands to the ground to others on front line. "Stay until kick" would be my guess. That one is on players. And Indiana's kicker kicked perfectly both times. The second one is on coaches .

There are a couple of player rotations that make me scratch my head but most make sense.

The coaches didn't tackle like crap. The coaches didn't take bad angles. The coaches weren't playing LB and get blocked out of a rushing TD by a 5'10" 185 slot receiver. The coaches weren't trailing WRs crossing the field by 5 yds. The coaches didnt over-pursue. But the defense gets a mulligan because it was so uncharacteristic of how they usually play.

I sat in 2nd row behind indy bench. There was only one time they showed real emotional hope of winning this game (28-21). And then iowa stomped that ember of hope with the TD before half. Other than that -- nothing.

While I haven't been at the front of the pack in criticizing KF and the coaching staff, this is one game where criticism should be muted.

kudos, thumbs up and likey

If what the OP says is true then it logically follows that the players also lose games despite the coaching...

We need to get this important breakthrough information to AD's nationwide ASAP! There's hundreds of
Millions of dollars to be saved! We don't need no stinkin' coaches.

Discipline, personnel, technique...it's all coaching in some fashion or another.

cool story brah.

funny thing is, the coach said in the post game they really emphasized covering onside kicks.....leading into the game.

but i know, don't support your own staff.

If this is true then they have failed and Ferentz better hire another coach to teach the concept. They looked like they had no idea what an onside kick even was.

They are clearly developed well and coached sufficiently in practice.

In-game decisionmaking is the achilles heel.

I think you summed it up well. That has always been the trade off with this staff, great at running an organization, great at finding and developing talent, great at coaching up that talent.......head scratching stubbornness to a system to a fault, and poor in game decision making. All things equal I prefer what we have than most coaches. Take Hoke for example, he has no clue at running a big time D1 school, and can't develop talent for sh!t. Poor decision making may hurt a game or two a year. Poor organization and development hurts every single game you play in.
