McNutt

still no official word, but based on a few emails and one PM I have received today (and no, I have not visited any other Iowa related sites today, so if this is being discussed elsewhere, so be it), I will be surprised if Marvin isn't suiting up for the Hawks next year.

Still no word, or tea leaves, related to Sash

Hey Jon,

I just posted that his facebook says "I'm going back" so it's not official but it sounds like he's gonna be a hawk one more season

I hope so. This would be a good thing for JVB and Coker, not to mention McNutt. Come on Tyler, make it 3 for 3.

Excellent!

I think MM has potential to be an NFL receiver...but he needs another year of college ball. Good decision on his part.

Good to hear RE: Facebook post. Had not seen that either as I haven't 'friended' any current players...still not sure how I feel about that.

Here is how you feel. If you are a current student of the U of I, or were a student when they were a student while at Iowa or in HS then feel free. If you don't meet that criteria you are in all likely hood a creepy person.

Hard to swallow this seasons results with the mention of all of these players that will likely be drafted. What could/should have been...

The notion makes me feel a bit creepy, but the guys in the Iowa media I know that do friend current players, I don't think they are creepy. Some would argue that they are just doing their job, and I it's not illegal to follow these kids. So I can see both sides. I just haven't done it yet. Perhaps I will. Not sure.

I followed a few Iowa commits on twitter after they verballed, and that left me feeling more like 'better not to know' what some of them say on that stuff ;)

As a journalism major, I'll also be employing this method. It's really handy to keep up with and get ahold of players for interviews and the like. I've used it to talk with DJK, Morris, Coker, and even Jermelle Lewis (great interview there). For media members, it's just the newest tool of the trade.

I personally think it's killing journalistic integrity.

Marvin has never been a #1 receiver in college. Next year he will have that opportunity.

If you are a member of the Iowa press and you use this method to interview players during the academic year, you will land in hot water.

i bet you know how you feel about that. you are right to not think that is kosher.

to befriend someone you don't know, and then report stuff to others based on something that person said on his 'facebook' page. journalism? no. lot of other words for it.

If it is true about McNutt and Prater I thinik this is great for them and the team. I hope Sash comes back but only if its best for him.....not sure if it is. I'm really stoked that MM and Prater may be back

I don't think members of the media should "friend" players. It would sort of like be hanging out at the same bar/restaurant a player may frequent. Social media is changing the way we communicate but friending a player if you are a member of the media seems odd to me. I was a journalism major in college; worked in the newspaper industry as a reporter and now in corporate communications. Facebook to an 18-22 should be for friends and not for business.

When I was a sports reporter you had to make arrangements with the media relations team to interview players. I would think that interviewing players without the knowledge of media relations would be frowned upon, unless the rules of the game have changed.

I've never actually interviewed anyone but Lewis. But DJK, Morris, and Coker were all easy to get a hold of to talk to about setting up an interview (it was for a class assignment, not publication, so I thought it might be okay to talk, even with true freshmen).

It's not really any different than players having the numbers of sideline reporters. In the intro to the Michigan game last year, the sideline reporter had exchanged text messages with Tate Forcier. I don't think that's necessarily an unusual practice these days.
