McKenna Woliczko

Per Chad Liestikow, she has said that she does not want to go to a school and transfer. She wants to spend all four years at one school. Her dad said that her goal is to be the #1 drafted player in the WNBA when her time is up. A lofty goal, for sure but I like that she is thinking that way.

Hawkeyes have started a tradition of grooming Number One Recruits for the WNBA

Her final 4 were South Carolina, OSU, USC and us. Beat out Dawn Staley for her straight up. NIL is a thing for womens hoops but it's not as insane as the mens side. I bet the ratio of women decommiting compared to men is significantly less. They may transfer later but I don't see her pulling a Proctor last minute on us.

Makes 2 yrs in a row they've pulled a 5 star top 20ish player overall from California. With MW being ranked 6th. Jan is recruiting nationally. Kids from Oregon, Alaska, GA and Dominican republic have all committed the last 2 yrs all of em pretty highly ranked. That's what's amazing to me. Jan's taken the reigns and absolutely ran with it.

That video....of her Facetiming the coach?
I loved it. It felt authentic.
My favorite part is when coach J.....settled for a second and realized that an 18 year old girl just picked a program and presumably an education. Yes, there's potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars (or more) at stake based on this decision. But it's still a kid making a significant life decision that many kids who don't play sports make as well. And Jan's reaction was a genuine "CONGRATULATIONS!".

Like...."All basketball aside, congratulations."

Like the basketball part doesn't matter. Like Jan is so sure and has the confidence in herself, her team, the program and the university that her response was "CONGRATULATIONS". Not "we're so happy, we're gonna rule, this is gonna be great for us." It's gonna be great for the young lady.

I dunno. Probably read too much into it. But it stood out to me. As slightly out of place. Not the thing most coaches say. I can see a Staley or an Auriemma who might say "You made the best choice!" Almost like Jan doesn't have to continue to sell Iowa and her program. The confidence to say "Congratulations! You've done a hard thing!" knowing full well her program will sell itself in the (hopefully) coming years.

I'd seen her dad post some videos of her. I haven't seen many highlights of her to be honest. She has a jumper that goes out to the HS 3 pt line anyway and she really likes to mix it up inside mostly. I'm not so sure about her handles I didn't see her dribble much at all or do much in the open floor everything I've seen has been half court clips.

I get the sense that her best yrs will be her JR/SR yrs I don't think she's gonna be an instant dominant player right away. I think she'll need to get a little bigger/stronger to play inside the same way she has been. But she's skilled enough to. And yeah Iowa basically plays position less ball to the extent of just matching up situationally with who they are playing against.

As far as this yr goes I'll be curious about how the Stuelke at the 4 goes cause they're gonna be trying that again. I'm not sure she has the skills/outside shot for it but they can't leave Heiden/Hays on the bench much. They'll deserve PT too.
A #6 national recruit in basketball should make an instant impact. Like a major impact.

Apparently she can guard all 5 positions and wants to play the 3 (so not bulking up a ton) as that's the best potential spot for her in the WNBA.

Just spit-ballin', but the starting line-up in a year could be:

Chit-Chat (GA)
Deal (CA)
Woliczko 6'2" (CA)
Heiden 6'4" (OR)
Hays 6'5" (AK)

Jan has said she wants to play Heiden and Hays together some this year - and you'd think her idea might be to start them together once Hannah is gone.

That's an elite, national level line-up there.

The women's program is reaching another level.
