McGary vs Woodbury

All McGary's offensive game consists of is dunks. He's a great athlete, but he doesn't have any post moves. He got wide open dunks all day against VCU, he only had 4 double figure scoring games against B10 teams who don't run gimmicky presses.

Did you watch the previous game where he hit the shot just outside the FT line? He can do more than dunk, he just defers to others and that is not a bad thing. Also, that is kinda like the "Cody Zeller can only dunk, he can't shoot outside of a layup" which is completely wrong as well. It is just something Michigan doesn't ask him to do; not that he can't.

Back to topic with him against Woodbury; I don't think anyone is going to ever "dominate" Woodbury as I don't think anyone really has this year and he has played against better players than McGary. Keep in mind for the longest time McGary was the No. 1 player in their class, it isn't like people didn't think he could play. McGary is going to be scary good next year, but I also think Woodbury will be far, far better than he was this year as well.

Call it a draw at this point until they play against each other next year twice and I don't think McGary will leave early, he has a long way to go before that. He reminds me of Hansbrough, high motor, but has some athletic limitations. Also, from what I understand he loves college and is in no hurry to get to the NBA, but we all know how that can change when money is involved.

He really can't. I watched him struggle against B10 post defenses all year. He can finish well, but if he gets the ball on the block against a defender in good position, he's probably not going to score. And saying he has some "athletic limitations", what the **** are you talking about? The dude is 6'10, 250 and a phenomenal athlete. That's his best quality.

Okay, he can't and neither can Zeller.

The guy plays hard and I guarantee you, mark it down today, that when players are evaluated for the NBA his knock will be that he isn't a Center and isn't athletic enough to be a PF in the NBA. He is the left handed version of Hansbrough.

Don't get me wrong, I love the way the guy plays and you haven't seen his full game yet, but today was the first game I haven't seen of Michigan this season. He can do a lot of things, but doesn't get asked too. He has things to work on just like every other freshman.

McGary has the size to play center in the NBA, the knock on him will be that he's not very skilled. He's more of a hustle, put back type player. Zeller has more of an offensive game than McGary, just not enough of a game to be anything more than a rotation guy in the NBA.

I would say he will dominate Woody for the next 3 years.

As will the young post guy from Purdue for the next 3 years.

Woody doesn't have the body frame for body building. His shoulders and chest are too narrow. His hands are also weak.

Woodbury won't be the next Dwight Howard but he definitely will be able to put on more muscle than Erick Hansen or Kurt Looby. He'll be a lot stronger next year.

You must have forgotten ol' pan hands JR Koch, he couldn't catch the ball in the post at all the first 2 seasons at Iowa under Mr. Davis. Woody is far better in all aspects of his game as a freshman than Koch really ever was.

Koch was a scrawny little rat who wasn't very broad shouldered but filled out nicely and somehow was drafted, so unless your in the weight room with Woody and can see it for yourself, don't assume anything. He has gotten stronger as the season has progressed, and with that his confidence has grown. We can attribute our improvement in the last month to the play of both our young bigs, the future is very bright with Woody and Olesani under the basket.

I have seen every player fumble the ball, or lose a rebound they should have had. I don't understand why the spotlight is so intense on Woodbury, he is an instate recruit who stayed home...count your blessings.

Agreed. Woodbury can and will continue to be able to guard McGary so you certainly can't say McGary can dominate him.

Probably, the more apt comparison would be McGary (6-10/250) to Olaseni (6-10/230). In time (mid-JR and SR seasons) I think Olaseni will neutralize anything McGary has. Woody's only comparison would be to Hammonds of PU, assuming Zeller leaves early. We need to keep some things in mind, with regards to Woody: he is strong lower body and does not get pushed around on the low block (defensively), now, as a freshman. Woody uses both hands and when he gets the required upper body strength and more coordination, he will have lefty/righty hooks and finishes around the rim. If he ever develops a reliable J from the free throw line, watch out. Woody and Hammonds will be fun to watch over the next 3 seasons. My take is that Woody is a more disciplined player and person (work habits) and will not get dominated by Hammonds.

McGary = a more talented Russ Millard

I don't know if I would say more talented, Russ was pretty skilled and a better leaper but McGary is just 4 inches taller and probably 20lbs heavier at least. Thats a pretty good comparison though.

If Millard was 6'10 he would have been in the nba.

Woodbury's defensive abilities are way ahead of his offense right now but the offense will come as I'm sure he'll be hitting the weight room and working with the coaching staff on his low-post moves. The other thing that really impresses me is his outlet passes when he gets a defensive rebound. He's really good at quickly identifying who to get the ball to so we can get the transition offense going.

I'm just curious what most posters would be saying if Woodbury were on say Wisconsin, or msu, or any other BIG team for that matter. My gut tells me they'd be burying him with negative comments, but, because he's an Iowa kid, and because he's a hawkeye, views are a bit different. Problem is all of the hype he carried with him early on pretty much set unobtainable expectations for the kid.

Who says he's done growing? Most men continue to grow and fill out naturally until they are 21-22. I was pretty narrow at 18 but was definitely broader by 21-22. He has plenty of time to grow and put on muscle. I'm just glad we our getting 4 year players.
