mccall

A couple things. Kirk has said that McCall is out for the season. Maybe you should believe him over 3rd hand rumors.

re: "medical clearance"
The Gazette On Iowa podcast (which is awesome) addressed this last week. In 2007, Moeaki could have returned late in the season after breaking his arm early-ish against Wisky, but chose to sit him and get a medical redshirt. If they want to redshirt a guy, a reason will be made.
That was the day of the injury. Last week he said that McCall was making his way back nicely. I'll believe KF 6 weeks after the injury.

I just don't think anyone should think its 100% either way. Too many people are making claims about medical redshirt rules as if they are an NCAA compliance officer.

Actually the rules are pretty clear. It's a matter of what the coaches and McCall decide to do.

One thing we have all learned, there is no such thing as too many Hawkeye RB's. If McCall is good to go in a couple weeks? Awesome. If Canzeri is? Great. If Bullock or Johnson can carry some of the load? works for me.

I have a feeling that we will need most (if not all) of them for something by the seasons end.

I think the light has come on for Johnson. He only had two runs but both showed exactly why we had been hearing such good things about him when he became a Hawk. Great shiftiness, vision and good acceleration.

If our RBs could stay healthy we really WOULD have a problem of too much depth, given the talent we have seen from McCall, Canzeri and Johnson. Thank God, for now, Rogers can stay rooted at FB (and he looked very good for a guy just trying to get into "football shape").

Canzeri has hammy issues ... that's bad news. You never know when a guy has truly recovered from those. The plagued Stross through much of his career ... and they also hampered Bernstine a bit throughout his career too.

The rumors about McCall are true ... at least according to what I'm hearing.

It's definitely one of those instances where you want all hands on deck.

Lastly, has anybody heard anything about Bullock? He's kinda dropped off the map through the past 2 games. Is he injured or something?

After the Tennesse Tech game Ferentz did say that McCall would be out for the season. However, later the same week, Ferentz said that McCall might return later in the season.

Further, it is not Iowa's decision whether McCall is eligible for a medical hardship waiver. A formal application has to be made to the NCAA through the Big Ten office. The application must contain the player's complete medical record including x-rays, MRIs, etc.

Contrary to the statements made on the podcast, Moeki's medical record indicated that his injury kept him out the entire season. Obviously, Iowa did not chose to keep him out the rest of the season. The injury kept him out the remainder of the season.

Jesus Christ dude how many times do we have to be over this. If the injury is significant enough to warrant a player missing the whole season he will be given a medical redshirt. The NCAA doesn't run around like a bunch of Nazi's rejecting applications. If the injury was real (McCalls was) significant (McCalls was) and the team and it's doctors claim it's in the players best interest to miss the whole season the NCAA goes along. If it's reasonable the player could miss a whole season the NCAA will give it the old rubber stamp.

How would it be reasonable if he is already back practicing????

If he's back practicing then I'd say Iowa clearly doesn't intend to red shirt him. If they wanted to throw a medical redshirt they clearly could.

Here is an x-ray of the broken bone. He's a RB, he never got back to full strength, here is our application for a medical redshirt.

Because, he could be back "practicing"

in the sense that he is riding a bike or running in a straight line, but still not really close to 100% recovered.

If the player and staff determine that it will do him or the team no good to play again this year (even if he physically COULD play) he will not play again and he will get a medical redshirt.

If McCall is really back to what he was before the injury (I don't think that's the case) then Iowa has a serious decision to make with 6 games still left. I really hope that is the case and we would see him this weekend. But that seems like a pie in the sky type thing.
