McCall definitely not red-shirting

I bet he gets in the game on Saturday. Ferentz said the same things about Brad Rogers before the Penn State game "We'll see, hes been out a long time, not physically ready to go yet, hes getting close, etc etc etc................." Rogers was in the 2nd series of the game at fullback.

That is some incredibly fast healing. Amazing.
Hope we don't rush him back too soon.
Excited to see him again, though, he was really dynamic when carrying the ball.

I'm not sure what medically clearing someone has to do with PT. The NC2A is pretty thorough when it comes to giving hardship waivers. Either he can play or he can't. Doctors at Iowa aren't going to lie about his condition just so he can he be granted a hardship waiver.

This quote also makes me feel like we'll see him in the next two weeks...

Q. Red jersey in practice?
COACH FERENTZ: No. It’s just a matter of how much he can do, how much volume he can handle.

So they're not taking it easy on him.

Also, while we're on the topic, I would like to remind everybody that we're not talking about Trent Richardson here. I hope we can get McCall in there to give Coker a blow and provide a change of pace, but I don't think he's going to be rushing for 200 yards a game.

The way Kirk was talking about McCall and his progress, was almost enough for me to think he would be seeing action before the end of the season. Medically clearing him makes it a no brainer that he is going to be taking some game reps now. However, I would be surprized if it is going to be against Mn. I would think probably we'll see him in there against Meatchicken. But then again, if he's ready for Mn. it may be a good idea to give him a few feps against a lesser competition before being thrown to the wolves, or wolverines in this case.

They wouldn't be "lying" rather they would just not clear him for this reason or that reason. If he isn't cleared the NCAA has no other choice but to hardship him.

He dressed for the Indiana game, so it does appear imminent for him to play. Get him some carries at Minnesota so he is truly ready for Michigan and winning the Legends Division.

The significance is "Medically Cleared" means he is not eligible to receive a medical red-shirt. Medical red-shirts are allowed for players who compete in less than 25% of a teams games and then miss the remainder of the season with an injury. If he's "Medically Cleared" to play then he is not eligible to receive the red shirt because now if he doesn't play it's a coaches decision.

The ONLY reason he would be medically cleared to play is if the staff planed on using him this season.

I'm hoping I'm wrong here, but could the expectations of what we saw against Tenn Tech be a little over the top at this juncture. It was a lower, lower level opponent and their defense was weak, weak weak. I want to get him back also to see what he can do, but I'm not sure he's going to come out of the gate running like Shonn Greene.

Granted, it was brief. But he hit the hole with a lot more quickness and purpose than Coker. That was plain to see.
You give him the same holes as Coker, and he'll get at least as much yardage.

DID YOU SEE THE TENN TECH GAME?!?!!? OMGZ THIS IS HUGEEEEEEE HE'S GOOD FOR AT LEASTTT 250 A GAME!! COKER IS GOOD BUT MCCALL IS THE LOVECHILD OF DARREN SPROLES AND DOAK WALKER!

The most promising part of his usage in the TTU game was that the coaching staff used him early in the game and obviously see him as a complimentary #2. They don't appear willing to use any of the other RB in such a role.

Duff -

There is no provision set by the NCAA that requires that a player not be medically cleared. Or, to be more precise, there isn't one that I've been able to find. The precise statement is that the injury must cause the athlete to be incapacitated.

As others have stated ... just because a player is medically cleared doesn't mean that they're able to fulfill the demands of the position. Ferentz has been equally clear that McCall still needs to prove that he can make hard cuts and the like. If not ... then he's still not ready to play at RB.

And, it likely goes without saying, there's no question that the staff would have the appropriate medical documentation in order to allow him to successfully petition for a medical hardship waiver.

While there may not be a medically cleared provision the distinction is important, especially given how KF chooses to handle these type of things. I've seen him talk about injuries enough to understand that he doesn't come out and talk about someone being cleared if he doesn't think they are going to contribute. The fact he could be ready for our difficult stretch coming up, combined with KF's language, and I think it's all but assured he's going to see time for Iowa this year.

I guess my understanding of "medical redshirts" is that you have to show quite a bit of proof that a player wasn't able to perform at any level because of an injury(this is how it's been described to me by a player who was trying to receive one at least). If McCall is practicing, there is no way he's going to be given a hardship waiver. Unless you'r going to fake test results or have doctors lie through their teeth, being unable to play for 4 or 5 games isn't going to allow you a hardship waiver.

Just because the staff decides not to play him doesn't guarantee anything. If he is cleared to play by the doctors, and doesn't play, the NC2A will just assume that was a coaching decision and not a medical one. This is why quite a few athletes get rejected when they try and file hardship waivers.

I definitely agree with you there ... I think that McCall will likely play too.

The OL has been making some strides is run-blocking .... and Coker has been doing a good job of punishing opposing Ds. With Coker already having softened up opposing Ds ... Ferentz KNOWS that we're going to have to lean more on the running game as the weather gets colder and more windy.

Ferentz has been very clear about having a desire to WIN NOW. Part of ensuring that we win now is by getting "all hands on deck" when it comes to toting the rock. The guys who are doing the best in practice are going to get their chances.

blah blah blah, mock all you want. I don't make too many predictions or talk up too many players, but he is one I have defended. I don't care what defense he was playing, you can see speed and ability if he were in a tennis match. If he stays healthy, this kid is gonna be really good. Really good.
