McCaffery talks about Recruiting

Don't need a traditional 5 once again those days are long over. If white is athletic as they say and nobody is going to push Basabe around next year. The 7ft that hurt us the most this year was from behind the arc, and he graduated anyway. Iowa was 3rd in the conference in offensive rebounding. We need scorers athletic scorers period.

If you look at what killed us all year, it was the long scoring draughts. I think bringing in guys who can create off the dribble will help alleviate that problem. It wasn't that our inside game killed us. We actually had more of a presence inside this year, than any year under Lick. It would be nice to get a big this year, but I think Fran realizes that bringing in the best talent at this point (no matter what position) is the way to go. Use next year to fill in the pieces, once you have grabbed more talent.

This. Perimeter defense was another thing that killed us, especially earlier in the year. A/the solution to those problems is to get more athletic on the perimeter. And that seems to be what we're going for at this point. Hopefully we can land Cezar and then one of Carter/Miller/Hubbard, in addition to White and Ogelsby, that could be a major influx of talent (Ogelsby seems to be a clone of Gatens. How much does it say that in Fran's first full recruiting cycle, his "worst" recruit is almost identical to Lick's best one?).

I've said this before but we are going to miss Cole than most realize. He was much more of a scoring threat than Brommer/Archie will provide.

Definsively, I think we can actually improve (if Brommer learns to stay out of foul trouble) but we will be taller and longer and have more of a block presence inside and alter shots.

Agreed. The development of Cole's jumper has really added a new wrinkle to what we can do offensively. It's huge when your big man can step out from 15-17 feet and hit the jumper with relative consistency. We're really going to miss him next year. I really hope he elects to stay on as a GA.

Isn't that like saying if Glen Worley could stay out of foul trouble Iowa could have had more success under Alford? In other words, there is just nothing to indicate this can happen.
