McCaffery expects to sign only 2 this fall

Per Rob Howe:

McCaffery says he expects to sign two players - Oglesby & White - in early period. Must not be feeling good about chances w/ @tylerharris25

Think this means no more recruits for 2011 class. I really hope he knows something about the 2012 class that no one else does because it is obvious he is putting all his eggs in that basket. If that fails then...

So apparently this can be translated to mean that we have gotten a "Thanks, but no thanks" from Harris. :(

I guess what we have right now is going to have to impress this year to increase the amount of interest from the 2012 class, because right now, we're swinging on missing on any recruit that isn't from Iowa, or isn't lightly recruited.

I could be wrong, but college basketball has 2 signing days, an early period in November and then some period in the spring. So, he could be putting Tyler Harris in the spring period and still be recruiting '11 kids during the season.

Unless I am mistaken, Coach could not have said what you have in italics as it would be an NCAA violation. Perhaps Rob added the two player's names, but I am fairly sure that Fran would not mention their names.

As for Harris, we will know on Friday one way or the other...

And I agree with 1977, there is still plenty of time to recruit 2011 players. Their senior seasons have not even begun and it is not unusual for players to come into their own and rise up in the recruiting picture during their senior season.

Frustrating.

The fate of the program does not rely on this year or next years class. We have some talent (not a lot) on the team but a good coach can get them to play above their abilities. If this happens, then I don't see how we would miss on future recruits. Kids right now have no idea what to expect of a McCaffery coached team. Sure they can watch film of him at his previous schools but will it translate to wins at the Big10 level? I don't know nor do they. Right now it's a wait and see process. If we have a fun uptempo team next year that surprises with a few more wins then our 2012 class should take shape fairly early. If we struggle then not much is going to fix the problem.

The program is at the lowest of lows. The facilities have improved but are nowhere near the top of the food chain. We haven't been to the NCAA tourny in god knows how long. We've finished bottom half of the Big10 for too many years. What kid wants to be a part of that? I wouldn't if I was a recruit even if I grew up being a huge hawkeye fan so I can't expect those kids to sign until they see the goods. I have a lot of confidence in the Iowa program right now. We made a huge mistake hiring Lick and a bigger mistake letting him stay for as long as he did. It was obvious that his style of play wasn't going to be successful nor was his recruiting bringing in any talent. Combine that with the alford fiasco and we have ourselves a program that is hurting. I give it 3 yrs before we are back to the NCAAs but we make the NIT next year with a .500 record in Big10 play.

frustrating, but not surprising considering the situation Iowa basketball is in. Fran knows what he's doing, but that doesn't mean he can turn it around.

Hopefully we can be competitive, win a few games we aren't favored, and sway some recruits with the style of play and potential for early playing time.

Would be interested to hear more about other early offers we had out to guys for 2011.

Eric Katenda

Greg Sequele

We need size and especially need a bruiser.

As I have said all along, if Iowa doesn't get Harris to commit, there will be no panic, no gloom and doom from me. A player that is on Iowa's radar, but no offer is Luke Mergerson from Duncanville, TX. Mergerson is a player Coach Dillard should be very familiar with, he plays on the same AAU team as his son. Mergerson is a 6'8", 240 lb. power forward that can play uptempo and has good shooting range. The important thing to remember is that he was a teammate of Perry Jones, who will be playing at Baylor, so Luke was not a focal point, this year he could be. Duncanville is a power team at a high level in Texas.
The one thing about Katenda that scares me is academics, too much of that in the program in recent memory.
Sequele is a player that I really like, but I don't think he will contribute a whole lot as a freshman, at least offensively, but can contribute immediately defensively and rebounding. Super athletic for his size and lots of "potential" for his future.
If Iowa offers Mergerson and Sequele, that would be their best offer and Iowa could have their two big guys that they desperately need.

From the presser:

Q. Early signing period starts next week. You have two in the fold, finalist for another kid announcing on Friday. Where are you beyond that? Do you feel like it’s two or three in the early period?
COACH McCAFFERY: It’s probably going to be two in the early period. Yeah, it’s probably going to be two. Then we’ll regroup. We’ve got a core group of guys that we’re looking at. A number of other players will eventually pop up.

Iowa is most definitely not done with the 2011 class. Not by a long shot. However, it does appear as if McCaffery is not confident on Harris. Looks like Keno will get him.

We have no idea if Harris will verbal to Iowa. McCaffery certainly is not going to let the cat out of the bag today if Harris is announcing Friday. What is McCaffery supposed to say: "Well, we have two verballed right now and we are waiting on the third to make his decision public on Friday!" Kind of a dead give away that way! With that said, Harris may not be a Hawk, but nothing McCaffery said or didn't say today proves that???

Right now recruits have to visualize a little too much with Iowa. Not only how successful Fran can be in the Big Ten but also the new practice facility. Getting the practice facility done will definitely help with 2012 recruiting, hopefully recruits will also see promise in Fran's first year at Iowa.

Good post, Hawkeye12345, I agree with all. I think this team has more ability and talent than one would imagine. Under Lick there was no individual progress whatsoever. Fran will find and utilize the potential of our players and I am confident that they will respond. The mood of the players is encouraging. They are eager to play real basketball. When the recruits see what Fran is bringing to the table, they will come. It is only a matter of time. I am certain that there will be players available this Spring. There will be many flying under the radar that will be revealed as the season progresses.

One comment Fran made that got my attention... "Cole has shown improvement..." That comment could be taken in two ways.
1) he's improving in understanding the new system or
2) he's improving as a player.

I maybe misinterpreting the intent, but I sensed that it was more in the latter aspect that the coach was talking about. Indicates the lack of teaching that may not have been occurring before...
