McCaffery concerned about Gesell's foot

I definitely felt that was only in reference to the next game. Even if Mike did play and the injury progressed to a stress fracture, it wouldn't be any kind of career-altering injury. He'd take it easy for a couple months in the offseason and let it heal. This injury is not that big of a deal, in terms of long-term effects, anyway. It just might make him ineffective in the short term.

That said, especially for Friday, Marble would be better at the point than Mike, IMO. Mike is hobbled and Marble can't possibly fail to create an insane mismatch against a PG from Stony Brook. He's five inches taller than any guard on Stony Brook's roster, and I'm guessing he's probably considerably quicker than the guys those players are used to guarding.

this. 100 times this. if we can't physically dominate SB, we deserve to lose. we could, in theory, be 4-5 inches taller than them at every position.

Seriously. He's likely talking about in terms of the next game.

Gessell said the trainers told him he in all likelihood won't hurt it further, it's just a pain tolerance question of if he can deal with it.

And it appears he cannot be effective with it.

I am sure the U of I orthopedic specialists and radiologists have looked at all xrays and okayed him to play.

I really doubt he would be playing if there was any kind of fracture.

It is probably soft tissue injury and they needed to make sure there wouldnt be any problem where tendon or ligament linked with bone.

Doctors make the final judgement here and inform the team and trainers.

It's a bone injury. A stress reaction is a disruption of bone metabolism due to repeated stress. It CAN develop into a stress fracture if the stress continues. However, Mike said the doctors told him that the particular bone affected in this case is very unlikely to fracture (I'm guessing it's the metatarsal to his big toe, as that's an uncommon bone to suffer a stress fracture in due to its density).

If there is no danger of creating serious damage, and he wants to play through the pain, which hs does. It is going to be difficult to keep him off the court. Perhaps his time can be limited and hopefully Sapp can take care of the ball, we might be alright. It would be very rewarding to get to MSG.....

With modern medicine he'll be fine and live a full life. Heck cut them off and use prosthesis. It work for the South Africa runner that just shot his girl friend on valentines day.

It's all a matter of whether he can contribute. He said he's got to be honest with himself and know when he's doing more harm than good. He's getting close to that right now.

Marble looks much better when he's playing point too, I still think next year he plays point more with MG at the two.

I'm starting to think we are best with marble/gessle rotation at point guard.

Then bring jok/oglesby at the shooting guard once they get their sea legs.

I say just run him into the ground until his foot breaks..I want to win the NIT too but he obviously was hurtin. Is it worth it?

Mike should sit versus Stony Brook. If we can't beat them without a hobbled MG, it's time to start the offseason. He'll want to play vs Virginia but should only play spot minutes if AC is having a bad game. If we make it to MSG, Fran would probably have to break his leg personally to keep him from playing.
