May's Journey Entering Final Act

May's Journey Entering Final Act - Iowa Official Athletic Site

From article:

"I was more an offensive-minded player my first three years," said May. "I had to be because of the different make-up of those teams. Now, I'm more of a facilitator, making solid plays, and I've accepted that role. I like being that type of guy and feel like I do it well."

"Being a part of turning this program around is what I came to Iowa for," said May. "I'm really happy to see the positive direction it's going."

I know a lot of the posters on here don't appreciate what May brings on the court, but he is a great leader and truly a class individual.

I think even those who were harsh with May the last year and a half recognize what an incredible part of this team he's been. In some less-than-obvious ways, Eric is a mirror image of Matt Gatens. Eric might not go down as a top-100 player in Hawkeye history, but I'm not sure we've had a guy who is more emblematic of what it means to be a Hawk in Iowa City since Jess Settles. It's not going to be the same without him here.

May had been a rock all season. Every games he contributes and brings energy. Glad this year is going well for him and hope we can make a good run to keep him around a little longer.

I love Eric May, and definitely see the positive impact he's quietly had this year. But Gatens would be on that "emblematic" list ahead of May.

He's been great this season, and I've actually been hoping he would look for his own shot more at times. Which is something I never thought I would say before the year began.

What does this mean?

Gatens, Ryan Bowen, Dean Oliver and Greg Brunner were the four other players who came to mind as I mentally sorted through guys. I think Eric's right there with those guys.

Can he redshirt next year? just kidding. He definately will be missed even though some Hawkeye fans may think otherwise. I'm just glad Ghost isn't here to make some sarcastic remark.

It's a purely subjective "je ne sais quoi" measurement that anyone can feel free to disagree with. But I think of guys who thrive with few natural skills by sheer force of will and determination when I think of Hawkeye basketball.

I think I see him as more of a Jarryd Cole type than a Matt Gatens type. Jarryd had some hard years but came back to have a solid senior season. I don't think Matt would of been as much of a leader his senior season, if he didn't see how Cole did it in his last season with us.

He really improved over last year. I used to cringe whenever he began dribbling the ball. His handle is much better this year and his shot has improved as well.
He's playing within himself and is a solid leader.

I actually have been yelling at my screen for Eric to drive to the lane and do that 8-10 ft jumper more this year. When we are struggling with our second string, we need him to step up and do that more. He has been pretty consistent with it all year.

May has been a trooper, a good kid that plays hard.

I hope he is the last kid for a long time to come through the system and finish with a losing record for the games in which he played.

A New Era has arrived!

I like Casey's comparison to a J. Cole type player...Eric May has become my favorite Hawk this year. Good insights on this thread. Remember, he was trying to play with a very painful back last year. I have to wonder what would have happened with his career if he had not suffered with that bad back. And, finally: Have you ever seen Eric's girlfriend? Wow.

Most of the games I have thought that he should be on the court more. He has shot the ball well all season long, his D has been solid and that energy that he brings with him is contagious for this team. He is a master at reading passes and getting in the passing lane for a steal and run out. Glad to see many on here feel good about May.

Why would people hate May? No one expected him to play 30 minutes a game and score 13 points a game. He is limited and has been playing very well within his limits.

I was saying since his freshman year that developing a pull up jumper in the lane would be deadly. He doesn't dribble well enough to get all the way to the hoop off the bounce but he can elevate very well and is good at at least getting a 1/2 step on the defender in short bursts. All he has to do is dribble hard to the FT line jump up and shoot the ball over the defender. He is strong enough and elevates well enough for that to be a very strong part of his game.
