Cleveland Browns LB Matt Roth asks to be traded, report says | cleveland.com

CLEVELAND -- Browns restricted free agent linebacker Matt Roth asked to be traded today, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Roth, who was claimed via waivers from Miami on Nov. 25, has not signed his one-year tender of $1.809 million. He was absent from the start of organized training activities today and Schefter reports that he wants to be traded because the two sides are too far apart on a long-term deal.

The Browns were not immediately available for comment.

Roth, a sixth-year pro, made an immediate impact last year in his six games at outside linebacker, establishing himself as a pass-rushing threat. In his first game with the Browns, he made a career-high seven tackles and sacked Carson Palmer. He finished tied for third on the team with four sacks, while adding 28 tackles and a pass broken up. Roth was a key factor in the Browns' four-game winning streak to end the season.

Really Matt??

Makes sense. This is really his last shot at big long term deal. He wants it, the browns dont want to give it to him.

There is a reason Drew represents so many of todays highest paid players. You might not like his tactics but he's very very good at getting his clients what they want.

WOW, Matt is negotiating his way out of the NFL. He has not done anything significant at the Pro level yet and he is walking away from 1.8 million???? If you have had the career Roth has had to this point, you take the money and go out and prove you deserve a long term contract.

Shut up and play hard, Matt. You aren't enough of a talent to make this type of noise.
And you sure aren't enough of a brain to make $1.8 mill in the real world.

This reminds me of the Ross Verba situation with the Browns a number of years ago where he wanted more money. Verba never played another down in the NFL after he yanked around the Browns.

I don't know, I grew up with very little money, and the opportunity to make 1.8 million for 1 year of work, would make me sign the papers...yesterday.

If you're with the Browns and you weren't drafted by the Browns there's probably a reason you're with the Browns. In this situation, Jerking around with the Browns so you're no longer with the Browns probably means you'll not be with anybody. In this instance the Browns aren't the first rung on the ladder, but the last.

I would think if you go out and play, play hard, perform, and keep your mouth shut things will work themselves out for the best.

He's (directly or indirectly) has already gotten himself into a proverbial p!$$ing match with Bill Parcels. My guess is when that happens the NFL truly does stand for 'Not For Long'. You can p!$$ off Al Davis. You can p!$$ of Jerry Jones. However, you DON'T p!$$ off either Bill (Parcels and Belichick) .

What does Belichick have to do with the Browns? He was the best player on their defense last year in only 6 games. He was a waiver wire pick up who the dolphins admitted they made a mistake in releasing (they thought he would clear the waivers). He is also probably playing out of position as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 ala Kampman. He could really increase his value dramatically as a 4-3 end purely rushing the passer.

The NFL is a young man's game, Roth is getting old by NFL standards and he sees the writing on the wall. I like the guy, but if I were a GM, no way would I give him more than a year or two contract at a time. After they cram down the new labor agreement this coming offseason, you'll be able to get Roth 2.0 (Clayborn) for the same price as Roth thinks he's worth but you'd get a model with lower miles.

I'm simply saying there are certain people in the NFL that you don't want to be your enemies and Belichick is one of them. I'm not saying Roth is ideally suited for the 3-4 though his stats in 08 were respectable. Obviously to continue this discussion would be an insult to you.

+1

Was thinking the very same thing. Although I had the Raiders as the last rung. Browns next.

Wow, you guys are harsh towards a former Hawkeye. If Roth had as much impact as the article implies, the Browns are getting a pretty good deal at $1.8 million. Contracts aren't worth anything in the NFL (gotta remember players need to get paid what they are worth on an annual basis because they can get cut at any time with no money paid - regardless of number of years on contract), so if you are worth a new signing bonus you go get it.

Roth and his agent know Holmgren is a shrewd guy. They probably figure Roth is worth more to him than $1.8 million, or wouldn't be asking for more or a trade.

Pretty sure the Browns and the NFL are doing ok financially.
